John Deere Manual Features & Content Preview

This John Deere service manual covers the 1975–1982 200, 208, 210, 212, 214, and 216 lawn and garden tractors and their listed attachments. Publication SM-2105 includes revisions through October 1981.

Text search and diagram detail: The manual pages have searchable OCR text and section/group bookmarks. Recognition errors can affect searches; the cover and closing page have no searchable text. Small wiring labels require zooming.

  • Engine repair: Minor and major Kohler engine reconditioning, including cylinder-head and valve work, piston inspection, crankshaft service, and camshaft and governor repair.

  • Fuel system: Carburetor overhaul, governor-linkage adjustment, mechanical fuel-pump repair, and diagnosis of hard starting, flooding, and surging.

  • Electrical diagnosis: Starting, ignition, and alternator tests, safety-switch checks, starter overhaul, and wiring diagrams organized by model and serial range.

  • Power train: Four-speed transaxle rebuilding, bevel gear differential service, variable-speed drive adjustment, and mechanical and electric PTO clutch repair.

  • Lift systems: Electric lift diagnosis and actuator service, plus optional hydraulic-lift pressure testing, pump overhaul, control-valve repair, and cylinder replacement.

  • Steering and brakes: Ross steering-gear service, toe-in adjustment, front-wheel bearing replacement, and serial-specific band-brake and clutch-brake linkage procedures.

  • Attachments: Repair sections for the 37A snow thrower, 39 and 47 rotary mowers, 541A PTO attachment, and 31 rotary tiller.

The overhaul sections suit experienced mechanics familiar with precision measuring tools, electrical testers, and press work.

Kohler Engine and Fuel-System Repair

Compression testing accounts for the automatic compression release (ACR) camshaft. Crankcase-vacuum diagnosis uses the illustrated U-tube water manometer, while reconditioning covers cylinder measurement, deglazing and boring, valve-guide replacement, bearing inspection, and crankshaft end play.

Valve-clearance procedures distinguish the K181 engines from the adjustable-tappet K241–K341 engines. Oil-pan specifications identify the aluminum-to-steel change at S/N 95,261/95,262 on the 210–216 tractors.

Carburetor work includes float adjustment and governor sensitivity. Separate fuel-pump sections distinguish the K181 pumps from the larger-engine versions, with pressure tests and diaphragm/check-valve service.

Flywheel service cautions identify the brittle ceramic magnet ring, which can be damaged during handling or ring-gear replacement.

Transaxle, Variator, and PTO Differences

The transaxle chapter includes an exploded 4-Speed Transaxle Assembly view, gear shift pattern and power-flow illustrations, shifter-fork inspection, seal installation, and bevel gear differential assembly. Troubleshooting addresses gear clash, hard shifting, gear jump-out, and lubricant leaks.

The 208 has no variable-speed variator. The other covered models receive variator teardown, sheave and bearing inspection, and linkage, spring, and belt-guide adjustments. Brake procedures distinguish early independent pedals from the clutch-brake arrangement beginning at S/N 95,001.

Mechanical cup-and-cone PTO service applies to S/N 30,001–190,000; electric PTO service begins at S/N 190,001. The electric-clutch section covers field-coil tests, armature clearance, bearings, and assembly-level replacement limits.

Wiring Diagrams and Fault Isolation

Four main wiring diagrams span two pages: early 200/210/212/214 tractors at S/N 30,001–70,000, the 208, and 210/212/214/216 tractors at S/N 70,001–190,000 and 190,001 and up. Additional diagrams cover cranking, ignition, charging, electric lift, and electric PTO circuits.

These serial-specific diagrams and cranking test charts help distinguish an interlock fault from a starter or solenoid problem before components are replaced. Charging tests separate alternator-stator, rectifier-regulator, battery, and connection faults; ignition coverage includes static and timing-light methods.

Electric and Hydraulic Lift Service

Electric lift procedures distinguish 2-1/2-inch and 3-inch motor/actuator assemblies. The smaller motor is a replacement-only component; the larger version has brush and armature service. Both actuator sections identify components that require assembly replacement.

Welded cam-and-arm lifts use the JDM-65 Electric Lift Cam Template. Incorrect cam geometry can damage the control switches; the manual separates this adjustment from the one-piece cam design.

Optional hydraulic-lift coverage for the 210–216 tractors includes Parker Hannifin gear-pump overhaul, control-valve inspection, and system pressure testing with the JDST-5 gauge. The Cutaway View of the Double-Acting Cylinder explains the Cessna unit, but this welded cylinder is nonserviceable and is covered for removal and replacement.

Attachment Service and Workshop References

Attachment chapters cover snow-thrower rotor and bearing replacement, mower spindle service and blade balancing, 541A PTO gear-case rebuilding, and tiller chain-case repair and tine identification. Lift adjustments and troubleshooting also address the 43 front and center blades.

Reference material includes maintenance intervals, fluid capacities, wear limits, electrical test specifications, and component torque tables. The Rear Wheel Weight Bolt Size Chart and Set Screw Seating Torque Chart remain separate references; transaxle service tools are identified in kit 670188.

Follow the manual's precautions for rotating attachments, spring tension, and pressurized hydraulics.

PDF Contents and Page Breakdown

Supplied as one printable English PDF. The 303-page PDF contains 301 manual pages, including contents pages and 13 blank section pages, plus one cover page and one closing page; both additional pages are already included in the total.
