The middle-gear section warns that hammering the universal joint can distort the driven-pinion collapsible collar, changing spinning torque and forcing replacement and reassembly. Overtightening the bearing-housing bolts can also reduce backlash enough to damage the gears. The fork chapter identifies excessive separation force as a cause of oil-seal and slide-metal damage and warns that bottoming the inner tube can damage the oil-lock piece.

Because the procedures include engine removal, hydraulic-brake repair, and work around a gas/oil rear shock, the motorcycle must be securely supported and each system made safe before disassembly. Yamaha warns that repairs attempted without the assumed mechanical knowledge can leave the motorcycle unsafe for use.
