Several repair cautions are especially important. The middle and final-drive bearing retainers use left-hand threads, so forcing them in the conventional direction can damage the retainer or housing. Hammering the universal joint during backlash work can deform the collapsible collar and alter pinion preload, while overtightening the bearing-housing bolts can reduce backlash enough to damage the gear teeth. During fork work, excessive tube-separation force can damage the oil seal, slide metal, and oil-lock piece, and the numbered side of the new seal must face up during assembly.
