These service articles combine mechanical repair references with year-specific electrical books. The application headings help match procedures and parts information to the vehicle's year, engine and system; many illustrations are credited to Hyundai Motor Co.

Coverage spans selected 1999–2005 GL, GT and GLS applications, with different coverage in each article. The A4AF3 material does not include a full internal overhaul procedure. Internal M5AF3 overhaul is addressed by a separate article outside this collection.

Engine, Driveline and Electrical Repair Coverage

The following selected contents highlight the main repair areas. Other references include drive-belt routing and vacuum-hose routing.

• Engine repair: Step-by-step engine/transaxle removal, cylinder-head and bottom-end work, timing-belt and cam-chain service, lubrication, cooling, intake and exhaust procedures.

• Automatic transaxle: A4AF3 Hi-Scan data, DTC and symptom diagnosis, road and stall tests, oil-pressure checks, hydraulic circuits and service adjustments.

Engine Inspection and Assembly

Cylinder-head and valve-train sections add hydraulic lash adjuster troubleshooting, valve-guide and seat reconditioning, crankshaft bearing selection, and piston-and-ring inspection. The 1.5L article details rocker-arm shaft assemblies, while the DOHC material also addresses cam-chain components.

Cooling coverage includes leak and radiator-cap pressure tests, water pumps, radiators and thermostats. The articles provide component torque specifications, fluid capacities and service limits alongside clearance and electrical-test data. Intake and exhaust material also covers manifolds and catalytic converters.

The 2000 1.5L and 2001 1.6L material refers to TSB 02-20-002 for updated cylinder-head, connecting-rod and main-bearing bolt reuse and tightening guidance. That bulletin is not included.

A4AF3 Diagnosis and Driveline Service

For a shift complaint, A4AF3 fail-safe and symptom charts connect the observed behavior with related electrical and pressure checks. DTC procedures, solenoid and valve-body checks, and hydraulic diagrams for Neutral/Park, Drive gears and Reverse support fault isolation.

Sectional views accompany shim and thrust-component selection. PCM replacement and shift-control service are also covered, with special-tool references for the 09452-21500 pressure gauge and adapters and the J28467-B engine support.

Clutch material extends to master- and release-cylinder disassembly, pedal adjustment, cover/disc inspection and release-bearing checks. M5AF3 service includes drive-shaft oil-seal replacement and shift-cable inspection.

ABS, Base Brakes and Suspension

HECU connector views and separate 2001 and 2002 Anti-Lock Brake Wiring Diagrams support wheel-speed-sensor, tone-ring and warning-lamp fault isolation. Base-brake material adds booster and proportioning-valve tests, front caliper and rotor repair, and rear drum and hub service.

Wiring, Body Equipment and HVAC

HVAC material includes refrigerant recovery, evacuation, charging, performance testing and manifold-gauge diagnosis. The cabin-filter article notes that 2000–2004 models did not have a factory-installed filter.

Timing Precautions and Shop Safety

The timing-belt article identifies the 2001–2005 1.6L as an interference engine and warns of internal damage if camshaft and crankshaft indexing is lost. Its tensioner warning explains how an incorrect bolt sequence can rotate the tensioner and overtighten the belt.

Fuel-pressure release is covered for work involving injection components. Engine/transaxle removal calls for suitable lifting and support equipment; hydraulic brake work and R-134a service require the appropriate bleeding and approved refrigerant-recovery equipment.

Selected Piston Ring and Cylinder-Head Limits

For the 2004 1.6L engine, standard side clearance for No. 1 and No. 2 piston rings is 0.04–0.085 mm, with a 0.10 mm service limit.

The same engine's cylinder-head flatness specification is a maximum of 0.03 mm under the standard specification, with a 0.10 mm service limit.
