Gasoline and Diesel Engine Work

Engine documentation is separated by build: the 1420 John Deere/Yanmar 3TG72-JMA gasoline engine, 1435 Yanmar 3TNE74C-JUV diesel, 1445/1545 Yanmar 3TNE78A diesel, and 1565 Yanmar 3TNE88 diesel.

Diagnostic procedures cover compression, oil pressure, fuel pressure and flow, cooling-system pressure, thermostat operation, valve clearance, valve lift, injection nozzles, and fuel-system bleeding. Gasoline-engine coverage also includes carburetor inspection and choke and governor adjustments.

Internal repair extends to valve guides and seats, pistons and connecting rods, cylinder-bore measurement and honing, crankshaft and main bearings, camshaft and followers, timing gears, oil pumps, rear seals, and flywheels.

Injection-pump limits: The timing sections warn against routine timing adjustment. Pump and governor repair is assigned to a qualified fuel-injection repair shop, with removal and installation restrictions for authorized factory-trained technicians.

The 3TNE88 section identifies factory-set gear/hub timing that must remain undisturbed and warns that operating the injection pump without its required oil can damage it.

Transaxle Overhaul and Driveline Alignment

Power-train tests include neutral-creep adjustment, F-N-R linkage adjustment, differential-lock setup, and 4WD axle pivot-clearance checks. Repair procedures cover transaxle removal, hydrostatic-unit separation and overhaul, charge-pump service, PTO disassembly, differential repair, and 4WD axle work.

The 1545/1565 chapter adds two-speed range and four-wheel-drive output-unit repair. Component drawings identify the front axle housing and its relationship to the differential and 4WD driveline.

Alignment and assembly: JDG-1389-1 is the engine-alignment base, used with JDG-1389-2 for 1400-series machines or JDG-1389-3 for the 1545/1565. Engine-to-transaxle alignment is a specified damage-prevention check after driveshaft removal.

Two-speed hydrostatic assembly instructions distinguish swashplate thrust-washer and shim positions and orientation. Dimensioned fabrication drawings support making the PTO clutch-piston compression tool and differential-lock snap-ring tools.

The lubricant section specifies HY-GARD J20C, requires Low Viscosity HY-GARD J20D below -18°C (0°F), and warns against Type F automatic transmission fluid.

Serial-Specific Electrical Diagnosis

The early and later wiring documentation helps match circuit tests to the machine’s production configuration before tracing a fault. Examples include Schematic (1400 Gas Series S/N -20000) and Schematic (1400 Diesel Series S/N 20001-; 1500 Series S/N 10001-; 1545 All).

The Cranking Circuit Schematic and Operator Presence and PTO Interlock Circuit Schematic accompany circuit operation and fault-isolation information. Tests cover loaded and no-load starter amperage, alternator output, glow plugs, relays, switches, fuel-shutoff solenoids, cooling-fan circuits, and cruise control. Cab road-light wiring is also included.

Hydraulic, Steering, and Brake Diagnosis

Hydraulic testing distinguishes the 1400-series charge-pump system from the 1500-series hydraulic-pump system. Procedures cover oil warm-up, bleeding, charge pressure, pump flow, PTO relief, and implement relief.

For the 1500 series, implement-relief specifications are 9307 kPa (1350 psi) at slow idle and 11,031 kPa (1600 psi) at fast idle, with hydraulic oil at operating temperature.

Drawings include the Main Hydraulic Schematic With Optional Auxiliary Valve (1500 Series) and Double Spool Auxiliary Hydraulic Kit Schematic. Lift-cylinder coverage is removal and replacement; the manual identifies these cylinders as nonserviceable.

Steering leakage tests distinguish valve leakage from cylinder leakage. Brake repair extends to linkage, pedals, and park-brake hardware.
