2002–2004 John Deere 717 / 727 Mini-Frame Z-Trak Zero-Turn Mower Technical Manual (P/N TM2043)

This is the North American edition of John Deere technical manual TM2043 (JUN02) for the 717 and 727 Mini-Frame Z-Trak mowers, including 48-inch and 54-inch deck configurations.

Repair limits: Pump inspection identifies damage that requires complete pump replacement, including worn cradle bearings. Wheel-motor service covers seals, seal rings, and the outer bearing; wear or damage to other parts requires motor-assembly replacement.

PTO Clutch and Mower Spindles

PTO coverage includes electrical and mechanical diagnosis, clutch removal and installation, and the break-in procedure. The manual reserves clutch adjustment/break-in for dealer personnel.

The Spindle Cross Section and exploded views show bearing, seal, and spacer relationships. The spindle procedure warns that clamping the blade end of the shaft in a vise can damage its surface and impair blade operation.

For the covered Kawasaki engines, intake and exhaust valve clearance is 0.075–0.125 mm with the engine cold; ignition-coil air gap is 0.2–0.4 mm. The engine specifications list minimum oil pressure of 241 kPa (35 psi) at 3000 rpm; the oil-pressure test is performed at normal operating temperature.

The blower-housing and shield specifications give 6.9 N·m for their M8 mounting cap screws. General metric and inch fastener torque charts are also included.
