Yamaha Manual Features & Content Preview
- A 315-page PDF set pairing the 193-page XL760/XL1200 Service Manual (P/N LIT-18616-01-88, first edition October 1997) with the 122-page XL700 Supplementary Service Manual (P/N F0M-28197-Z8-CX, first edition October 1998).
- Engine repair coverage runs from removal and cylinder/piston inspection through crankcase and crankshaft service and coupling alignment.
- Carburetor service includes diaphragm and needle-valve inspection, throttle synchronization, model-specific choke adjustments, and fuel-pump disassembly.
- Factory procedures cover axial-flow jet pump removal, impeller and drive-shaft service, and intake-duct bushing and oil-seal replacement.
- Electrical diagnosis addresses CDI ignition, starting and charging faults, sensor checks, and model-specific wiring diagrams.
- Steering and hull repair sections cover control-cable replacement and adjustment, reverse-gate service, and fiberglass damage.
Yamaha wrote the main manual primarily for its dealers and trained mechanics, assuming a working knowledge of mechanical and electrical service.
Model Identification and XL700 Supplement
| Model | Engine configuration | Listed starting IDs |
|---|---|---|
| XL760 | 66D, 754cc twin; two Mikuni BN44 carburetors | Primary GU2: 800101; EUR: 600101. Engine: 000101. |
| XL1200 | 66F, 1,131cc three-cylinder; three Mikuni BN44 carburetors | Primary GU3: 800101; EUR: 600101. Engine: 000101. |
| XL700 | 67E, 701cc twin; two floatless carburetors | Primary F0M: 800101. Engine: 300101. |
These are water-cooled, reed-valve two-stroke engines with oil injection and direct jet-pump drive.
The XL700 document is a supplement, with its own carburetor settings, engine-assembly details, electrical tests, and oil-level warning-lamp checks. For unchanged procedures, it specifies the XL760 sections of companion manual GU2-28197-Z7-C1. The base PDF supplied in this set carries the U.S. publication number listed above.
The main manual is an English image scan. The supplement includes English, French, German, and Spanish text.
System Coverage and Diagnostic Reference
Oil injection coverage extends to pump and check-valve inspection, system air bleeding, and the XL1200 oil-pump cable adjustment. Exhaust service covers the chamber, muffler, water lock, and cooling-water hoses.
The Trouble Analysis charts link no-starts, rough idling, overheating, increased bilge water, and poor performance to components and repair chapters. Multifunction-meter tests cover display operation, warning indications, and the security function.
The supplement adds peak-voltage tests for the CDI unit, charge and pulser coils, lighting coil, and rectifier/regulator. Its electrical-analysis section distinguishes connected-system and disconnected-coil measurements.
The base manual also explains how test-meter resistance affects low-resistance measurements.
Jet-pump and intermediate-housing procedures distinguish model-specific bearing positions and shaft installation depths for the two main models. Hull-repair material covers scratches, punctures, and insert-nut repair, with further fiberglass work referenced to the separate Water Vehicle FRP Repair Manual.
Mechanical Specifications and Clearances
Reference tables provide component-specific tightening torques, fluid capacities, cylinder and piston wear limits, crankshaft clearances, and electrical test specifications.
Exploded views of the Crankcase, Impeller and Drive Shaft, and Cooling and Bilge System accompany parts callouts and removal/installation charts. The Ignition System and Indication System wiring diagrams include wire-color keys, with connector views in the main electrical diagrams.
Special-tool references identify the YB-06117 flywheel puller and YB-06049 drive-shaft holder. The XL700 supplement specifies peak-voltage adapter 90890-03169.
The carburetor notes explain how steel-wire cleaning can enlarge jets and affect performance. Flywheel-removal cautions identify engine and tool damage from uneven puller installation.
Have a certified marine technician oversee or verify critical powertrain maintenance, particularly work involving fuel vapors and ignition sparks.
