Yamaha Manual Features & Content Preview

This factory Yamaha service-manual set covers three clearly separated XJ configurations: XJ700N/NC, XJ700S/SC, and XJ750XN. The XJ700N/NC volume is for the air-cooled Maxim; the XJ750XN volume covers the liquid-cooled Maxim-X. The XJ700S/SC booklet is a supplement and must be used with the XJ700N/NC manual for full repair procedures. Yamaha states that these publications were written primarily for dealers and qualified mechanics and assumes a working knowledge of motorcycle repair.

This is a 503-page PDF set — XJ700N/NC Service Manual, P/N LIT-11616-04-85: 222 pages; XJ750XN Service Manual: 252 pages; XJ700S/SC Supplementary Service Manual, P/N LIT-11616-05-04: 29 pages.

  • Engine repair coverage runs from removal and complete disassembly through cylinder-head, valve-train, piston, crankshaft, lubrication, clutch, and transmission inspection, followed by reassembly and final adjustment.
  • Cylinder-head procedures include camshaft and cam-chain timing, valve-guide replacement, valve-seat cutting and lapping, valve-clearance setup, piston and cylinder inspection, and color-code selection for crankshaft and connecting-rod bearings.
  • Shaft-drive service covers the middle gear, drive shaft, universal joint, and final gear, including disassembly, bearing service, gear-lash measurement, ring-gear positioning, shim selection, tooth-contact checks, and troubleshooting charts.
  • Fuel and cooling work includes carburetor-bank removal and overhaul, float and fuel-level adjustment, vacuum synchronization, intake and crankcase-ventilation routing, plus XJ750XN radiator, thermostat, water-pump, coolant-filling, and electric-fan diagnosis.
  • Chassis repair sections address wheel and bearing service, dual front-disc calipers and master cylinder, brake bleeding, rear drum brake, front-fork disassembly, steering-head adjustment, swingarm service, and rear shock inspection.
  • Electrical diagnosis is supported by complete XJ700N/NC and XJ750XN wiring diagrams, along with electrical starting, charging, ignition, lighting, signal, fuel-warning, and XJ750XN cooling-system circuit and troubleshooting charts.

XJ700NC California JYA1JJ00*EA000101 1JJ-000101
XJ700S Except California JYA1NH00*GA000101 1NH-000101
XJ700SC California JYA1NK00*GA000101 1NK-000101
XJ750XN Maxim-X JYA1FL00*FA000101 1FL-000101

The distinction matters before parts or repair data are selected. XJ700N/NC and XJ700S/SC use the 696 cc air-cooled DOHC four with Hitachi HSC33 carburetors. The XJ750XN Maxim-X manual is built around the 749 cc liquid-cooled DOHC four, its five-valve cylinder head, Mikuni BS33 carburetor bank, and dedicated cooling system. The XJ700NC and XJ700SC material separates California emission-control maintenance and model-specific carburetor identification from the non-California versions.

The 29-page S/SC supplement concentrates on model changes: revised service schedules, ignition-timing checks, fuel-warning diagnosis, and replacement engine, chassis, electrical, torque, and capacity data. It does not replace the base manual.

Factory data, tooling, and repair cautions

The manuals supply component-specific torque tables, fluid and lubricant capacities, inspection limits, running clearances, gear-shim calculations, carburetor adjustment data, and electrical test specifications. Exploded assembly views precede the major disassembly sections, while lubrication diagrams and cable-routing views support correct reassembly.

The XJ700N/NC tool pages identify the YICS shutoff tool YM-08025, vacuum gauge YU-08030, tappet-adjusting tool YM-01245, universal clutch holder YM-91042, middle-drive pinion holder YM-33222, and final-drive gear-lash measurement tool YM-01230, among other factory equipment.

The final-drive chapter flags a left-hand-thread bearing retainer; treating it like a conventional thread can damage the retainer or housing. It also warns that final-drive bearings and races removed during repair must not be reused because removal can damage the matched bearing surfaces. Brake bleeding, compressed-spring work, electrical testing, and running-engine carburetor synchronization require suitable shop equipment and the safety precautions stated in the manuals.
