Polaris Manual Features & Content Preview

  • 1,586 PDF pages across two files — a 1,463-page compiled Tecumseh/Peerless service collection and a separate 123-page L-head engine Technician’s Handbook. The standalone file overlaps with the version inside the master PDF but carries the complete 14-page Sears/Craftsman engine cross-reference appendix.
  • Eight core factory handbooks cover Peerless transmission and drive products (Form 691218 R1/02), cast-iron four-cycle engines (691462A), general two-cycle engines (692508), L-head engines (692509), TC/TCH engines (694782), 840-850 two-cycle engines (694988), overhead-valve engines (695244A), and VLV/Vector engines (695578).
  • Engine repair procedures cover carburetors and fuel systems, governors, recoil and electric starters, ignition and charging, cylinder and valve service, pistons and rings, rods, crankshafts, camshafts, bearings, seals, lubrication, inspection, reassembly, and adjustment.
  • Peerless drivetrain service includes identification, troubleshooting, internal disassembly, gear and shaft inspection, shift-key and bearing service, brakes, seals, reassembly, and setup across the major mechanical drive families.
  • Specialized system coverage adds the TVT691 V-twin handbook (P/N 696325), twin-carburetor synchronization, Tecumseh’s cordless electric-motor service handbook, Italian-built two- and four-stroke engines, and later LTH hydrostatic pump/motor-module replacement and final-drive service.
  • Factory reference support includes wiring and charging diagrams, exploded assembly views, diagnostic charts, torque and service-specification tables, the Quick Reference book, replacement-engine catalogs, 1999-2002 technician updates, a dedicated service-tool catalog, and historic service bulletins.

Engine Families and Repair Depth

Coverage is organized by engine or drive-product identification rather than one blanket model-year range. The eight numbered handbooks occupy 610 pages of the master PDF; the other 853 pages contain reference books, specialized system manuals, catalogs, annual training updates, tools, educational material, and service bulletins.

The standalone L-head handbook applies to ECV100-120; H22-80; HH40-70 and HHM80; HM70-100, HMSK70-110, and HMXL70; HS40-50, HSK30-70, and HSSK40-50; HT30-35, HXL35, LAV30-50, and LEV80-120; TNT100-120; TVM125-220, TVS75-120, TVXL170-220, and TVXL105-115; plus V40-80, VH40-70, V60-70, and VM70-100.

Separate handbooks extend the engine repair coverage to VH80/VH100, HH80/HH100/HH120, and OH120-180 cast-iron engines; AH520/AH600, AV520/AV600, HSK600, and TVS600 two-cycle engines, including legacy Type/Specification ranges 638-670 and 1398-1642 plus Craftsman 200 Series units; TC/TCH 200 and 300 engines; HSK/HXL840-850 and TVS/TVXL840 engines; OHH50-65, OHHSK50-130, OHV11-17, OVM120, OVRM40-675, OVRM120, OVXL/C120, OVXL120, and OVXL125 overhead-valve models; VLV40-675; and the TVT691 V-twin. The European section also covers Italian-built families such as Vantage, Prisma, Synergy, Spectra, Futura, BVS, BH, AV, and MV.

Fuel-system material distinguishes float and diaphragm designs, fixed-jet emission carburetors, primers, impulse pumps, and model-specific carburetor series. The manuals carry the repair through governor setup, starter and ignition testing, alternator and battery checks, and internal engine inspection. The TVT691 section covers twin Series 7 carburetors and throttle/choke synchronization, while the DC 24-volt handbook addresses battery-pack wiring, charger testing, motor/controller/indicator diagnosis, maintenance, and storage. Specifications are supplied by assembly, including torque data, clearances, wear limits, carburetor settings, capacities, and electrical test values.

Peerless Transmissions and Diagnostic Material

The Peerless handbook covers 100 Series differentials; MST200; 300; 600 and 601; 700 and 700H; 800/801; 820; 900, 910, 915/940, 920, and 930 Series units; 1000/1100 right-angle and T-drives; and 1200, 1300, 2300, 2400, 2500, and 2600 transaxles. These mechanical sections document teardown and reassembly, gear-train and differential inspection, shifter components, bearings and bushings, brakes, seals, lubrication, and model identification.

The VST material is primarily for operating diagnosis and fault isolation rather than a complete internal hydrostatic pump-and-motor overhaul. Later technician updates cover replacement of the non-serviceable LTH pump/motor module and service of the final drive. That distinction matters when deciding whether this set supports the repair being planned.

Useful visual references include Peerless 820- and 900-Series exploded views, the VST operating and troubleshooting chart, TVT691 twin-carburetor and choke-synchronization illustrations, DC 24-volt battery/charger/controller diagnostic charts, ignition-identification and charging-circuit diagrams, and replacement-engine dimensional drawings.

Tools, Scope, and Shop Use

Service Tools Form 694862 R5/00 identifies engine service kit #670195E, Peerless kit #670254A, VST control-arm puller #670342, flywheel removal tool #670306, pressure-test kit #670340, and low-pressure adapter #670345. Quick Reference, catalog, training, and bulletin material supports model decoding, replacement selection, test-equipment use, and production-change recognition.

Two cautions in the material are especially relevant to repair planning. The VST tool information warns that removing the control arm without the specified puller can cause severe internal damage. The Italian-built engine section also identifies certain engine flywheels that require the dedicated removal tool because conventional methods can damage the main-bearing ball races.

The 1,463-page master file is a compiled scan collection of separate Tecumseh and Peerless publications, not one factory-bound handbook. Its Italian-built engine section begins at printed page 2 and refers exploded views and component part-number lookup to a separate Tecnamotor/Tecumseh Europa spare-parts catalog, which is not included. Confirm the engine model, specification and date-of-manufacture code—or the complete Peerless identification number—before selecting a procedure. Before repair work, isolate the ignition and battery/charger circuits, contain fuel as required, and secure the equipment against accidental starting, rotation, or movement.
