Engine mechanical coverage goes well past routine maintenance. It documents 2JZ-GE and 2JZ-GTE compression testing, valve-clearance inspection and adjustment, ignition timing, timing-belt removal and installation, cylinder-head disassembly and inspection, and cylinder-block service. Separate GE and GTE files handle SFI, emissions, ignition, troubleshooting, and fuel-system repair. The turbocharger section addresses low power, abnormal noise, oil consumption, pressure-tank checks, turbocharger service, and intercooler inspection.
Diagnosis, Wiring, and Body Work
The GE and GTE diagnostic files cover trouble-code retrieval, fail-safe operation, Toyota hand-held tester use, break-out-box and ECM terminal checks, intermittent-fault simulation, and circuit-by-circuit troubleshooting. The HVAC section covers R134a pressure diagnosis, leak checks, evacuation and charging, control-panel self-diagnosis, and compressor, evaporator, heater-core, and actuator service. Dedicated sections also address charging, starting, cooling fans, SRS, ABS/TRAC, cruise control, theft deterrent, power windows, combination meters, and other body-electrical systems.
The 1995 JZA80 wiring book has system circuits for engine control, electronically controlled transmission, ABS and Traction Control, SRS, Progressive Power Steering, and radiator fan/automatic air conditioning. It also maps relay locations, connectors and wire routing, power-source current flow, ground points, and the overall electrical wiring diagram. The collision manual adds quarter-panel cut views, weld-point identification, body-dimension drawings, panel-replacement diagrams, and sealer, foam, and anti-rust treatment locations. Painting procedures are outside its scope.
Transmission and Driveline Scope
The on-vehicle A340E files are split between 2JZ-GE and 2JZ-GTE applications. They cover removal and installation, on-vehicle repair, shift-lock service, road testing, stall and time-lag checks, hydraulic testing, manual-shift testing, DTC diagnosis, and ECM terminal data. The 275-page unit-repair file goes inside the transmission with oil-pump, clutch, brake, one-way clutch, planetary-gear, transmission-case, extension-housing, and upper/lower valve-body procedures. It identifies non-reusable parts, bearing and race direction, clutch-disc arrangement, valve-body spring specifications, and check-ball locations.
A buyer should note the variant limit: the unit-repair file provides full overhaul chapters for A340E (2JZ-GTE) and A340E “Others.” A340H and A340F are represented by service-specification tables, not complete removal-to-reassembly overhaul chapters. The W58 section covers internal shafts, synchronizers, counter gear, reverse idler, case, and extension-housing repair. V160 coverage is narrower, concentrating on troubleshooting, transmission removal and installation, oil-seal and speed-sensor O-ring service, and specifications rather than a full internal rebuild.
The transmission chapters warn against turning the case over after oil-pan removal because debris can enter the valve body. They also show why bearing and race orientation, snap-ring position, and exact check-ball, retainer, strainer, spring, and valve placement must be preserved during repair; mixing similar internal parts can cause hydraulic faults or component damage.
Specifications and Repair Precautions
Factory tables throughout the set provide component-specific torque specifications, fluid capacities, hydraulic and fuel-pressure test data, clutch and brake clearances, wear limits, electrical test values, alignment data, and SST listings. Transmission removal, brake/TRAC bleeding, R134a service, SRS work, and collision welding involve heavy components, stored pressure, refrigerant, pyrotechnic devices, or hot work. Use proper support and isolation equipment and follow Toyota’s system-specific safety precautions.
