The 1984–1989 Yamaha FJ1100L and FJ1100LC factory service manual, publication LIT-11616-04-08, covers the standard and California versions. This is the first edition, April 1984, third printing, June 1985.

Engine Repair and Routine Maintenance

Maintenance interval charts separate emissions-related service from general maintenance and lubrication. Cowling removal, fluid changes, drive-chain care and cable adjustments are covered alongside ignition timing checks and compression-pressure measurement.

Valve train: The valve-clearance procedure uses adjusting pads above the lifters, intake and exhaust pad-selection charts, and tappet adjusting tool YM-33966. Cylinder-head work extends to valve-guide replacement, valve-seat reconditioning, camshaft inspection and cam-chain timing.

The camshaft installation cautions identify how an incorrect tightening sequence can bend or damage the No. 3 camshaft caps.

Internal inspection: Crankshaft and connecting-rod bearing color-code charts relate component markings to bearing selection. These charts and the clearance checks help identify the correct replacement bearings during an engine rebuild. Piston and cylinder measurements, starter-clutch inspection, transmission shaft checks and lubrication diagrams support the remaining overhaul work.

Component-specific torque tables, fluid capacities, wear limits and tolerance charts accompany the repair sections and appendix.

Mikuni Carburetors and California Equipment

Carburetor section views explain the main metering, float and starter systems. Overhaul coverage includes vacuum pistons, diaphragms, needle valves and jets, with separate float-height and running fuel-level checks. The pilot screws are factory preset; the manual does not provide a routine pilot-screw adjustment procedure.

Model identification pages list the starting frame and engine numbers for both versions. The carburetor table distinguishes 50H-00 standard units from 47M-00 California units.

California canister hose routing is illustrated separately, alongside crankcase-ventilation and boost-control hose routing.

Brakes, Suspension and Steering

Brake and hydraulic-clutch sections provide exploded master-cylinder, caliper and clutch-release views. The anti-dive section also identifies mineral-oil contamination in the plunger case as a cause of actuating-piston O-ring damage and brake-fluid leakage.

Suspension service: Fork procedures cover seals, bushings and damper-rod assembly. The Monocross “De Carbon” sections detail the remote preload/damping controls, adjusting chain and recommended settings for different loads. Steering-bearing adjustment and swingarm/relay-arm service have their own procedures.

The anti-dive valve assembly and rear shock absorber are treated as replacement units; internal disassembly is excluded. Brake and suspension work requires proper training and equipment, particularly when handling the nitrogen-charged rear shock.

Electrical Diagnosis

The Starting Circuit Cut-Off System diagram and starting-system troubleshooting charts distinguish starter faults from clutch, neutral and sidestand interlock faults. They help narrow down a no-crank complaint before parts are replaced.

TCI ignition coverage includes pickup and ignition-coil tests, vacuum-controlled advance and the boost-control connection to the No. 2 carburetor. Generator tests address the stator, field coil, brushes, rectifier and regulator.

The FJ1100L/FJ1100LC Circuit Diagram supplies wiring references and color codes. Lighting and signal checks extend to the self-cancelling flashers, diode block, fuel sender and oil-level warning circuit, with electrical test specifications.
