Full 1996 Procedures, Matched to the 1997 Changes
The 1996 manual carries the full factory service and repair procedures. The 1997 supplement is not a stand-alone replacement; it is intended to be used alongside the base volume and substitutes or expands only the areas changed for the later model year. It specifically states that the 1996 engine and drive/transmission procedures also apply to 1997 motorcycles. Together, the two publications preserve the complete base coverage while clearly identifying the parts and procedures that changed before disassembly or parts selection.
Routine sections cover inspection schedules, fluid requirements, battery and lubrication service, brake and tire checks, clutch adjustment, rear-belt and primary-chain inspection, steering-head service, fork oil, rear suspension setup, carburetor service, timing-mark inspection and ignition adjustment, V.O.E.S. checks, storage, and troubleshooting. The chassis chapters then carry wheels, hydraulic brake components, forks, the fork stem and bracket, swingarm, shock absorber, controls, instruments, exhaust, and bodywork through the applicable removal, disassembly, inspection, repair, assembly, installation, and adjustment work.
What Changed for 1997
The revised clutch release ramp was introduced on late-1996 motorcycles and used throughout 1997. It increases clearance between the coupler and primary cover without changing the basic clutch-adjustment or lever-freeplay procedure. The front brake rotor/carrier assembly uses revised fasteners and requires new retaining clips after separation. At the rear, a threaded rod replaces the 1996 swingarm pivot shaft, changing assembly and preload work and eliminating the need for the B-41175 pivot-shaft bearing adjuster.
Fuel and electrical changes are equally specific. The remote idle adjuster changes the idle-setting portion of ignition-timing service and removes the need for the earlier carburetor idle-adjustment tool. The modified air-cleaner assembly includes separate routing details for the California canister hose. New handlebar switches use different icons, connectors, and pin numbering; the horn is moved, the harness receives longer horn leads, and the supplement supplies an updated connector table, starter-interlock test chart, and 1997 wiring diagram.
Diagnostics, Factory Tools, and Reference Data
Exploded assembly views accompany the component procedures. Especially useful named references include the Internal Engine Passages color foldout; carburetor Fuel Supply System and Starting Circuit section views; Transmission Power Flow; Electric Starting System Diagnosis; the Charging System Circuit and troubleshooting chart; and separate 1996 and 1997 wiring diagrams.
A 14-page tools appendix illustrates the part-numbered equipment used throughout the procedures, including the B-41177 front-fork holding tool, B-42079 brake-caliper piston remover, HD-38515-A clutch-spring compressor, and HD-39965 Deutsch terminal crimp tool. Section specification pages provide component torque charts, capacities, gear-ratio data, tire information, wear and clearance limits, ignition settings, and electrical test values. Appendix B adds metric conversions plus general Grade 8 and metric fastener torque tables.
Uneven turns at the two rear-shock preload nuts can pull the adjuster out of alignment and let the spring bind against the rods. The front-caliper chapter also warns that compressed-air piston removal can eject the pistons suddenly; a dropped or damaged piston must be replaced. Brake, suspension, engine, fuel, and electrical repair should be performed with the motorcycle securely supported and with the protective equipment, isolation steps, and special tools specified by the factory procedures.
