Porsche 911 Workshop Manual Set, 1972–1989

The publications address different generations of fuel, drivetrain and electrical systems: the earlier material covers mechanical injection, CIS and Sportomatic, while the Carrera book covers Motronic/DME and 915/G50 installations.

Some early-model procedures refer to the pre-1972 Workshop Manual, Volume I, which is not included in this ZIP.

PDF Search, Bookmarks and Diagram Detail

Navigation and small labels: Neither PDF supports text search. Both have embedded bookmarks, although some Carrera bookmarks are misplaced or inactive. Small Carrera wiring labels require zooming; some fine labels in the earlier wiring diagrams remain difficult to read when enlarged.

Air-Cooled Engine, Drivetrain and Electrical Coverage

These coverage highlights are a selection of the contents; other topics include power-seat motors and exterior-mirror replacement.

• Maintenance references: Time/mileage service schedules, fluid and lubricant specifications, jacking points and component-specific tightening torques.

• Engine repair: Carrera engine removal, disassembly and reassembly, with piston, cylinder-head, crankshaft and camshaft reconditioning data.

• Fuel and ignition: Mechanical injection and CIS service, Motronic/DME component testing, fuel-delivery checks and driveability troubleshooting.

• Transmission and clutch: 915 internal repair, Sportomatic procedures, G50 external service and cable-operated or hydraulic clutch repairs.

• Suspension and brakes: Torsion-bar and wheel-bearing work, wheel alignment, hydraulic brake repairs and parking-brake adjustment.

The early workshop supplements assume basic automotive repair knowledge; the Carrera guide adds owner-level maintenance advice, while internal engine and transmission work calls for experienced technicians and specialist equipment.

Engine Reconditioning and Fuel Diagnosis

Carrera step-by-step procedures extend through crankcase assembly and camshaft timing, with separate inspection information for Nikasil and Alusil pistons and cylinders. Earlier factory sections address oil-tank and cooler changes, chain-tensioner overhaul and model-specific valvetrain adjustments.

The early chain-tensioner instructions warn that improvised screwdriver preload can distort the housing and seize its piston.

CIS charts distinguish cold control pressure by ambient temperature from warm control pressure and system pressure. Carrera diagnosis separates pump delivery, residual pressure and DME electrical checks, helping distinguish fuel-supply faults from sensor or control problems before parts are replaced.

915, G50 and Sportomatic Repair Depth

Clutch coverage distinguishes cable actuation from hydraulic master/slave cylinders and includes hydraulic bleeding and the G50 release-shaft bearing update. Internal gear and shaft repair applies to the 915; G50 disassembly is excluded.

The earlier Sportomatic chapters describe torque-converter and transmission disassembly, clutch-play checks and differential setup. The Carrera differential chapter covers troubleshooting and output-flange seal replacement; differential rebuilding and setup are excluded.

Chassis, Roof and HVAC Work

The alignment material connects torsion-bar changes with corner-weight checks. Carrera brake procedures include pressure, vacuum and manual bleeding, while caliper work stops at replacement rather than rebuilding.

Body coverage extends to window regulators, sunroof cables and motors, Targa seals and folding-roof canvas. HVAC sections cover heater troubleshooting, ventilation cable adjustment and compressor, condenser and evaporator replacement. Refrigerant discharge, evacuation and recharge methods are excluded from the Carrera book.

DME Circuits and Fault Tracing

ECM harness test tables and pin assignments complement diagrams for engine management, charging, starting, ground distribution and convertible-top circuits. These references connect electrical test results to individual circuits and components.

The DME cautions identify the risk of electronic-system damage from incandescent test lamps.

Use suitable lift equipment and jack stands, and follow the manual's precautions for pressurized fuel, ignition voltage and brake work.
