Diesel, Drivetrain and Hydraulic Repair Coverage

The following are selected repair and diagnostic topics, rather than a complete contents list. Additional material includes starter-motor and alternator disassembly.

• Engine repair: Removal and installation, cylinder-head and valve work, piston and crankshaft inspection, plus compression and cooling-system testing.

Engine and Transmission Identification

Engine identification is model-specific: the 4200 uses the Yanmar 3TNE78A, the 4300 the 3TNE84, and the 4400 the 3TNE88. Transmission coverage distinguishes CST collar-shift and SST Sync Shift units on the 4200/4300, HST on all three models, and SRT SyncReverser on the 4300/4400.

SST tractor PINs begin at LV4200C327001 and LV4300C335001. EPA engine coverage begins at serial numbers 016706 (4200), 011019 (4300), and 004915 (4400). These are engine serial numbers, separate from tractor PINs.

Fuel-injection scope: Procedures cover nozzle opening, leakage, and spray-pattern tests, non-EPA injection-pump static timing, and pump removal/installation. Internal non-EPA injection-pump/governor repair is referred to a qualified injection shop. EPA coverage excludes field timing adjustment and specifies complete-assembly replacement by authorized, factory-trained technicians.

Power Train and PTO Repair

MFWD axle identification: A20BZ103-1 and S20BZ105-1 use the tapered-roller-bearing procedures, while S20BZ107-1 and S20BZ109-1 use the ball-bearing procedures. The MFWD differential case and internal parts are serviced as an assembly; the ring gear and pinion are replaced as a matched set.

Rear PTO coverage distinguishes the European two-speed arrangement. The front PTO chapter extends to gearbox teardown and electromechanical clutch removal and installation.

The Hydrostatic System Schematic and PTO Troubleshooting Chart support pressure-circuit diagnosis and PTO engagement, slipping, and stopping complaints. The HST pressure-test results distinguish charge-supply problems from pump wear or directional relief-valve faults, helping technicians identify the affected circuit before selecting repair work.

Assembly cautions: The HST repair section warns that swapping the charge-pressure relief and cooler-bypass valve springs can damage the pump. Final-drive installation notes explain how an incorrectly seated pinion shaft can damage the brake pack and differential.

Hydraulic, Steering, and Brake Diagnostics

The hydraulic chapters distinguish the front steering/HST-charge pump from the rear implement pump. The 3 Spool SCV Hydraulic Schematic, 1 Spool SCV and Manifold Block Hydraulic Schematic, and Rockshaft Hydraulic Schematic show the alternative valve arrangements and lift circuit.

Step-by-step rockshaft disassembly and assembly procedures cover piston-ring and seal replacement, along with rate-of-drop/stop-valve service.

Steering coverage includes internal-leakage isolation and 2WD/4WD toe-in adjustment. The steering control unit and dual-ended 4WD steering cylinder are replacement assemblies rather than internally rebuildable units.

Brake repair addresses wet multidisc packs, gear/HST pedal linkages, and side-mounted versus console-mounted parking brakes.

Electrical Fault Tracing and Cab Service

Earlier and later main wiring harnesses are separated by tractor serial-number notes. The Engine Shutoff Circuit Electrical Schematic accompanies seat, neutral, parking-brake, and PTO interlock diagnosis. Diode-block and in-harness diode tests extend fault isolation beyond the switches themselves.

Cab material covers wiper and washer troubleshooting, heater repair, and cab removal.

Special Tools and Service References

Reference data includes inch and metric fastener torque tables, component-specific tightening data, fluid capacities, wear limits, cooling-system pressure-test specifications, and electrical test specifications.

Named tooling includes the JDG1259 Clutch Shimming Fixture and the D15001NU Magnetic Follower Holder Kit used during camshaft removal and installation.

Engine Clearance and Thermostat Test Examples

For the covered Yanmar engines, valve-clearance specifications are 0.15–0.25 mm with the engine cool at room temperature. The connecting-rod side-play check specifies 0.2–0.4 mm and requires engine removal.

The thermostat opening test specifies an initial opening range of 69.5–72.5°C. Its inspection criteria also include a minimum fully open lift of 8 mm at 85°C.

Because tractor splitting, pressurized hydraulics, and rotating PTO components involve significant physical risks, technicians and experienced owners must review the manual's safety precautions and system theory before beginning mechanical work.
