A Guide for Tractor Safety
Understanding the safety implications of purchasing and using a new or a used tractor is an essential element for anybody working either on a farm of any size, any type of smallholding, or any type of domestic land where a small or compact tractor might be utilized.
Agriculture is generally one of the most dangerous jobs, although the rate of chances and work-related injuries has dropped significantly in recent years. Even at that, the majority of work-related deaths and injuries in agriculture associate with tractors, particularly to young adults and children. Download your tractor manual here now.
Part of the causes for this is that farms are a unique setting from a workplace point of view. They are, without doubt, domestic residences. The family members of whoever owns and runs the farm is to be expected to be around in a number of situations where there is a potential risk of damage or injury to them.
In addition, many farms employ seasonal workers, depending upon the type of farming done, and as such, may engage people of early or late teenage.
In regard of tractor safety, there are two key safety considerations that should be taken into consideration so as to prevent the majority of tractor accidents. You can download your tractor manual, where you can learn more about how to maintain a tractor machine properly.
However, explicit understanding requires to be given to the specific type of tractor used, the environs within which the tractor is to be used, and the machinist's age and maturity or the operator of the tractor. This is where you need to download your tractor manual.
The common tractor accidents come from what are known as overturns and run over. Overtones are where the tractor, for some reason, will slope on its side to such an angle that it falls over.
This is very unsafe and can easily result in death or serious damage to the tractor driver. It tends to occur where the land has a number of trenches or a slope in the site that gives it a sharp edge.
It can also happen in residential and smallholding locations where a garden tractor is used in reverse or is utilized to close to the edge of a piece of land and is easily overturned as such.
Clearly, the best prevention is that you should only use the tractor on land that is level and where there is no slope. Most contemporary day tractors are fitted with what is known as a ROPS (Roll Over Protective Structure), although numerous older ones are not. Download your tractor manual for information on this.
Some makers such as Kubota fit a ROPS as standard on almost all of their models, including several of their garden and lawn tractors, comprising a foldable ROPS.
Many older tractors do not have a ROPS fitted and are much riskier as a result. a number of modern tractors also have a seatbelt fitted.
In a situation that there is an overturn, if the machinist or operator of the tractor is wearing a seatbelt and there is a ROPS fitted, then the probability of a serious accident can be considerably reduced, and the probability of a fatality is significantly lessened as well. Download your tractor manual to learn.
The other main cause of the accident on tractors is run over. This is where the tractor's machinist or operator stops the tractor but does not engage the parking lever appropriately. This means that the tractor can effectually run loose and easily run over either the operator of the tractor or anybody else who may be in the area.
This can be extremely unsafe, obviously, and can be prevented by the operator of the tractor, making sure it is appropriately parked and switched off before getting off. One other important safety measure is to make sure that your tractor is registered with the manufacturer directly and preferably with a local dealership as well.
This might occur automatically if you purchase a tractor from a dealer, but obviously will not if you purchase it second-hand or online, and is something you would have to do independently. Kubota has recently given out a safety recall for a fairly large number of zero-turn mowers/garden tractors that have an issue with the fuel tank, with potentially serious concerns in terms of safety.
