Coverage and Publication Scope

This set combines two different publications rather than two editions of the same manual. TM1360 is the John Deere machine-service publication, organized into repair and diagnostic sections. The companion shop manual is a condensed, paragraph-numbered reference with an index by starting paragraph and Condensed Service Data tables.

TM1360 states that the 756 follows 755 information and the 856 follows 855 information. Its late-model notes apply to later 755 and 855 tractors and to the 955, not to the discontinued 655, 756, or 856.

The TM1360 engine-repair section handles the oil cooler, radiator, and diesel-engine removal and installation, then directs complete John Deere Series 220 engine component repair to CTM3, which is not included in this set. The companion shop manual adds condensed, model-specific internal engine procedures for the cylinder head and valve train, timing gears, camshaft, pistons and connecting rods, crankshaft and bearings, oil pump, injection pump and governor, injector nozzles, water pump, starter, and alternator.

Service Procedures and Diagnostics

The hydrostatic transmission chapters cover removal, charge-pump service, internal disassembly and assembly, valve-plate and cylinder-block installation, and system flushing and bleeding. Transaxle work reaches into the mid and rear PTO shafts, PTO valves, clutch pack, inertia brake, differential, range gearing, MFWD gear case, oil-supply system, and control-linkage adjustment. Final-drive procedures address planetary carriers, axle shafts, brake camshafts, wear sleeves, and seals.

A component serial break is called out for the PTO inertia-brake housing. Earlier housings—655 below 610730 and 755/756/855/856 below 827729—require spacer M801959 when the later housing is installed. These are housing serial numbers, not tractor serial numbers.

Chassis coverage separates the standard 2WD front axle from the MFWD assembly. It includes spindle bushings and bearings, wheel bearings, axle pivot and end-play work, toe-in adjustment, MFWD spindle gear cases, the differential input housing, ring-and-pinion backlash, final-drive cases, and complete axle removal and installation. Steering valve coverage runs from removal through the metering and control sections to final assembly.

Hydraulic repair includes the pump and suction screen, priority and proportional flow dividers, regenerative and float SCV sections, system and implement relief valves, rockshaft piston and housing, stop, lowering, and check valves, control-valve adjustment, hoses, and bleeding. Brake-disc/linkage and 3-point-hitch link repair are also included.

The diagnostic sections are built around operational checkouts, symptom charts, tests, adjustments, and theory of operation. Engine/fuel procedures include electric and mechanical transfer-pump testing, injection-system bleeding, model-specific injection timing, cooling-system and radiator-cap tests, cylinder compression, idle-speed adjustment, and engine-oil-pressure testing. Electrical diagnosis distinguishes glow-plug preheat on the 655/755/756 from air-heater controls on the 855/856/955, and covers battery and alternator testing, neutral-start and PTO safety circuits, the time-delay control module, PTO magnet, fuel-shutoff solenoids, and starter draw and no-load tests.

Power-train, steering, and hydraulic testing includes transmission neutral and return adjustment, charge pressure and flow, relief-valve checks, steering pressure and leakage tests, hydraulic-pump flow, system relief testing with and without SCVs, transaxle lubrication pressure, PTO-clutch engagement pressure, and rockshaft leakage and adjustment.

Specifications, Schematics, and Shop Data

Applicable groups begin with essential tools, service equipment, materials, specifications, wear tolerances, and torque values. General sections cover serial-number locations, metric and inch fastener torques, O-ring fitting procedures, fuels and lubricants, coolant, and fluid-capacity categories. The companion manual adds condensed tables for engine dimensions, fits, clearances, tune-up data, and capacities. Compression testing calls out the JDG472 adapter for 655 and 755/756 tractors and the JDG560 adapter for 855/856 and 955 tractors.

Representative technical views include the hydrostatic-transmission cross-section, PTO-clutch cross-section, MFWD axle section view, steering-valve cross-section, model-specific electrical schematics, and the hydraulic schematic with component-location drawings.

The manuals also flag component-specific repair traps. Pump and motor hydrostatic components are not interchangeable, and damage to the lapped center-section, valve-plate, or cylinder-block surfaces can ruin the unit. During timing-gear work, turning the camshaft or crankshaft independently while the rocker assembly remains installed can damage pistons or the valve train; clamping the steering valve or metering assembly in a vise can damage its precision sections.

Follow the manual's procedures for hydraulic pressure release, tractor support, electrical isolation, diesel-injection safety, and PTO shutdown before testing or repair.
