The service manual supplies the main repair chapters, while the supplement updates tune-up data, specifications, and electrical layouts for its listed applications. The parts catalog supplies exploded assemblies, quantities, and service-part numbers.

The supplement is used with the base manual; it is not a standalone workshop manual. Because the parts catalog is model-specific, its part numbers should not be assumed to apply across every model listed in the supplement.

• Engine tune-up: Compression testing, spark-plug and contact-point service, ignition timing, spark-advance checks, governor adjustment, and cooling-air-door inspection.

• Electrical diagnosis: Starter-circuit tests, starter-motor inspection, timer/governor overhaul, alternator installation, and model-specific wiring diagrams.

The base manual describes an earlier engine configuration. The supplement's tune-up and specification pages are the reference for its listed OMC applications. Its tune-up checklist also calls for an overheat-warning-system check. Its Timing Mark Alignment and Valve Lash Adjustment figures connect the settings to the engine components.

Carburetor Repair and Parts-Catalog Scope

The base manual provides detailed Zenith and Keihin carburetor repair chapters, plus fuel-pump pressure checks and filter service. Keihin mixture adjustment calls for an exhaust analyzer.

The 898459A parts catalog contains a Walbro carburetor breakdown, while the supplement adds carburetor adjustment and performance checks. These do not provide a separate full Walbro overhaul chapter.

The catalog also identifies the 1-inch master cylinder, 2- and 4-weight governors, capacitor and standard ignition systems, lighting, front hubs, rear and parking brakes, frame, steering, and fuel-system components. Hardware, seals, and gaskets are listed alongside the assemblies.

Electrical Variants and Earlier-Model References

The supplement separates wiring diagrams for vehicles with the hazard-warning switch in the turn-signal switch from those with the switch on the dash. Matching the layout before tracing a circuit helps avoid using the wrong switch and harness connections.

The base manual contains lubrication charts and wiring references for earlier models, including 898407, 898415, 898419, 898425, 898434–898437, 898444, 898447, 898507, 898515, 898519, 898525, and 898547. These references have different coverage from the 898459A parts catalog.

Drivetrain Setup, Steering, and Brake Cautions

Transmission troubleshooting addresses gear clash, jumping out of gear, and oil leakage; repair procedures include reverse-idler and cluster-gear setup.

Worm-drive differential coverage includes axle service and bearing adjustment. Differential-carrier measuring and shim views document carrier replacement as a measured setup job; disturbing the shim relationship changes worm-gear alignment. Tool references include Surface Locator Tool P/N 880028 and flywheel knock-off tool P/N 112015. The catalog separately illustrates the 2-speed differential.

Steering instructions distinguish original- and new-design gears and their assembly requirements. Incorrect front-axle-lock placement can cause erratic steering; an unsecured brake backing-plate stop can allow rotation that damages the brake hose.

During brake, steering, and axle repair, support the vehicle on rated jack stands rather than relying on a hydraulic or mechanical jack alone.

A Preview of Valve-Clearance and Compression Data

Cold valve clearance: The supplement specifies .003–.004 in. (0.08–0.10 mm) between the rocker arm pad and valve stem with the engine cold.

Compression diagnosis: Its warm-engine test uses 130 PSI as the minimum, with no more than 10 PSI difference between cylinders. Test conditions include a fully charged battery and fully open throttle and choke.
