Model and Fuel-Injection Scope

The specifications distinguish the two engine versions as 399 cc and 449 cc, with separate bore dimensions and a common stroke. Both use the liquid-cooled, four-stroke DOHC single-cylinder layout, a six-speed transmission, hydraulically operated wet multidisc clutch, chain final drive, Nissin disc brakes, and Magneti Marelli fuel injection.

Fuel-injection coverage is limited. The troubleshooting tables reference the fuel-pump relay, injector mounting, throttle-body bypass, and injection adjustment, but the manual does not provide an ECU pinout, diagnostic-code system, electrical schematic, fuel-pressure test, or full Magneti Marelli repair procedure. Several generic maintenance and competition passages also retain carburetor, float-bowl, and jetting language. Those passages should not be treated as model-specific EFI repair instructions.

Chassis Setup and Visual References

Suspension coverage is considerably deeper than a simple specifications page. The manual explains how fork oil level, spring rate, damping, and fork-tube position affect braking dive, cornering, bottoming, and stability. A separate troubleshooting section relates common front- and rear-suspension symptoms to the settings that may need correction and explains how to evaluate front-to-rear balance before further adjustment.

Repair Depth and Important Cautions

This manual is strongest as an operating, maintenance, chassis-adjustment, and preliminary troubleshooting reference. It does not contain complete engine disassembly and reassembly, valve-clearance adjustment, cam-timing work, transmission overhaul, brake-system bleeding, or electronic-injection calibration. Buyers planning those repairs will need a dedicated engine or workshop repair manual.

Two warnings are particularly relevant to the FSE. The manual states that stopping the engine with the ignition key instead of the engine-stop button may damage the injection system. It also warns that incorrect oil-filter element positioning can prevent oil circulation and lead to engine damage.

Service operations involve gasoline connections, hot coolant and oil, raised wheels, brake components, and stored suspension-spring energy. Use stable supports and suitable tools, and note that the manual specifically assigns rear-shock spring removal and installation to qualified personnel.
