Hybrid Driving, Owner Maintenance, and Emergency Guidance

• Hybrid driving: Regenerative braking, engine stop/start behavior, EV-Drive Mode, electronic transmission controls, driving modes, and fuel-economy displays.

• Owner checks: Engine oil, engine and power-control-unit coolant, brake fluid, auxiliary battery checks, and floor-jack positioning, with required supplies and tools.

• Replacement procedures: Step-by-step instructions for air-conditioning filter service, electronic-key battery replacement, fuse replacement, and owner-replaceable exterior bulbs.

Hybrid Operation and High-Voltage Components

The Energy Monitor and Hybrid System Indicator explain engine operation, traction-motor use, battery charging, and regenerative energy. The indicator distinguishes Charge, Hybrid Eco, Eco, and Power areas; separate screens show 5-minute/1-minute fuel consumption and trip-based fuel-economy history.

The High voltage components layout identifies the traction motor, nickel-metal hydride battery, power control unit/DC-DC converter, orange high-voltage cables, service plug, and air-conditioning compressor. Operating explanations also cover Eco Driving Mode, Power Mode, and brake-actuator behavior.

Toyota warns against touching, disassembling, removing, or replacing high-voltage parts, cables, or connectors. High-voltage inspection and repair are not owner procedures.

Damage-prevention notes explain how a blocked cooling intake beside the right rear seatback can overheat the traction battery, water at that intake can cause short-circuit damage, and driving without the air-cleaner filter can cause excessive engine wear.

Climate, Cabin Features, and Customization

Automatic climate-control coverage includes steering-wheel controls, the Solar Ventilation System, and Remote Air Conditioning. Solar ventilation uses the roof panel to power a ventilation fan; remote cooling uses energy stored in the traction battery.

Non-navigation audio and Bluetooth hands-free sections explain controls, phone registration, calling, and phone-book functions. Seat and steering-wheel adjustment, mirrors, power windows, and moonroof operation are also covered.

Dealer-programmable customization tables identify Smart Key behavior, remote unlocking, automatic door locks, headlight sensitivity and shutoff delay, and interior illumination. Further settings cover Remote A/C button behavior, the reverse warning buzzer, and seat-belt reminders.

Owner Maintenance and Service Limits

Publication scope: Scheduled maintenance intervals belong to the separate Scheduled Maintenance Guide/Owner’s Manual Supplement. Navigation-equipped vehicles refer to a separate Navigation System Owner’s Manual. Toyota recommends its Repair Manuals for repair work; this owner’s manual does not provide workshop wiring diagrams, DTC diagnostic trees, or component-overhaul procedures.

Tires and lighting: Specifications distinguish the 15- and 17-inch wheel packages. TPMS initialization is described, while registration of replacement sensor ID codes is assigned to a Toyota dealer. Bulb procedures distinguish halogen headlights from LED lighting; failed LED low beams, stop/tail lights, and the high-mounted stoplight require dealer attention.

After-service checks: The initialization checklist links required resets to the maintenance performed, providing a practical reference when checking what remains after routine service. The emissions section explains how a disconnected or discharged 12-volt battery can erase OBD readiness codes and affect an I/M inspection.

Cooling specifications distinguish engine systems with and without exhaust heat recovery from the separate power-control-unit circuit. Other reference data cover fuel requirements, ILSAC multigrade engine oil, traction-motor output and torque, and traction-battery module specifications.

Warning Messages and Illustrated References

Warning tables distinguish conditions requiring an immediate stop, prompt dealer inspection, or an owner correction. Overheating guidance separately addresses the gasoline engine and power control unit, while emergency sections explain the checks associated with an inoperative electronic key or a hybrid system that will not start.

Illustrated references include Airbag system components, Fuse layout and amperage ratings, and the exterior and instrument-panel pictorial indexes. Fuse tables connect numbered positions to circuit names and ratings.

Examples of Fluid Capacities and Chassis Specifications

Engine-oil drain/refill reference capacities are 4.4 qt (4.2 L) with the filter and 4.1 qt (3.9 L) without. The transmission table lists 3.5 qt (3.3 L) of Toyota Genuine ATF WS as a reference quantity and directs fluid replacement to a Toyota dealer; it warns that another fluid can damage the transmission.

Brake specifications include SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 fluid and a brake-pad wear limit of 0.04 in. (1.0 mm). Wheel-nut torque is 76 ft-lb (103 N·m) for both documented wheel packages.
