Ford Windstar manual. 1998–2003, (P/N FCS-12255-01)

This is not a single, narrow OBD-II booklet. The download is a 248-PDF Ford Windstar reference set totaling 12,087 pages, combining English owner and service material with a Spanish-language 2001 Workshop Manual, Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual (EVTM), and Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual. Because the material moves from routine maintenance to internal engine and transaxle repair, scan-tool diagnostics, SRS, brake, A/C, and body-electrical work, it is suited to technicians and experienced DIY owners who already understand safe vehicle service and have access to the required test equipment.

• Year and language coverage: English files include 1998 electrical-location and charging information; 1999, 2000, and 2002 Windstar repair articles; owner guides for the supplied 1998, 2000, and 2002 editions; and a 2000 scheduled-maintenance guide. The full 2001 WSM/EVTM/PC/ED group is in Spanish.
• Engine work: Covers 3.0L and 3.8L service for the applicable earlier files, plus detailed 2002 3.8L in-vehicle repair, engine removal, disassembly, cylinder-head work, timing-chain service, inspection, assembly, and installation, with torque tables, wear limits, clearances, lubrication data, and material specifications.
• Transaxle repair: Includes a 1999 AX4S overhaul with hydraulic and air-pressure testing, oil-pump and valve-body service, differential and gearset work, planetary and clutch-pack inspection, servo selection, and reassembly. Later material covers 4F50N/AX4N diagnostics, cooler flushing, external controls, shift-cable setup, and transmission-range sensor adjustment.
• Brake, steering, suspension, and restraint systems: Provides diagnosis and repair procedures for disc/drum brakes, 4WABS, traction and stability assist, hydraulic control unit service and scan-tool bleeding, power steering, front and rear suspension, axle shafts, steering columns, air bags, pretensioners, crash sensors, the restraints control module, clockspring, and occupant classification system.

• Electrical and powertrain diagnostics: Supplies cell-based wiring schematics, connector and component-location views, PCM pin/PID charts, KOEO/KOER and continuous-memory DTC routines, symptom charts, pinpoint tests, OBD-II monitor checks, and reference-value tables for driveability and emissions faults.

Coverage That Prevents a Wrong Purchase

The English repair articles are explicitly labeled for 1998, 1999, 2000, or 2002 Windstar applications; the collection contains no repair article labeled 2003. The year folders are therefore organizational groupings, not proof that every procedure applies to every year in the folder. The 2001 Spanish PC/ED also states that the Windstar 3.0L application was removed for that edition, so its Windstar powertrain diagnosis should not be treated as 3.0L coverage.

Ranger, Escape, Explorer/Mountaineer, Blackwood, and other Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles appear in the multi-platform PC/ED and in several generic engine-performance reference articles. Those references do not make this a full repair manual for those vehicles. The August 2000 PC/ED specifically includes early-introduction 2002 Explorer/Mountaineer and Blackwood applications using the 150-terminal PTEC PCM; it also distinguishes them from 60- and 104-terminal strategies in the connector, DTC, and pinpoint-test material.

Mechanical and Diagnostic Depth

The 2002 3.8L engine section goes well beyond maintenance. It documents upper and lower intake manifold repair, valve covers, front cover and seals, timing chain, both cylinder heads, oil pan and pump, flexplate, rear main seal, valvetrain components, complete engine teardown, subassembly inspection, reassembly, and installation. The AX4S overhaul similarly carries the repair through internal clutches, servos, valve body, oil pump, differential, geartrain, and final checks rather than stopping at fluid service.

The PC/ED is organized into system description and operation, diagnostic methods, no-code symptom charts, powertrain DTC tables, pinpoint tests, and reference values. Coverage includes catalyst, EVAP, EGR and electric EGR, fuel control, HO2S, misfire, secondary-air, and thermostat monitors. Required or identified equipment includes the Rotunda WDS 418-F224, EEC-IV 60-pin breakout box 418-005 (014-00322), EVAP system tester 310-F007 (134-00056), and the recommended EEC-V 104-pin breakout box 418-049 (014-00950).

Wiring and Repair Cautions

The 2001 Spanish EVTM, publication FCS-12255-01, includes schematics for power distribution, electronic engine controls, AX4N transmission controls, ABS, air bag restraints, and the power sliding door. It adds connector end views, full-page component-location views, circuit voltages, component tests, ground and splice identification, and harness-part references.

The AX4S overhaul warns against using the oil-pump/valve-body bolts to pull the assembly into the case, which can damage the parts. The SRS material warns that over-rotating the clockspring can break its internal ribbon and that incorrect routing or positioning can damage occupant-classification components. Follow the manual's depowering, fuel-system, refrigerant, lifting, and brake-service precautions; several repairs require a scan tool, pressure equipment, or controlled handling before components are disconnected.
