1939–1952 Ford 9N, 2N, 8N Tractor Service Manual (P/N 40000230)

This reprinted Ford service manual, identified as 40000230 on the cover, covers the 1939–1952 9N, 2N, and 8N tractors. Compiled from earlier Ford publications, it focuses on the 8N; much of the information is also useful for 9N and 2N service.

Carburetor, Governor, and Water Pump

Carburetor coverage extends to the throttle body, float, needle and seat, venturi, and metering jets. The carburetor attachment cross-references Ford and Marvel-Schebler numbers and distinguishes versions with and without the economizer jet, helping identify the correct assembly before selecting parts.

Governor inspection addresses the drive gear, bearing races, balls, lever mechanism, and shaft bushing. Governor Drive Shaft, Disassembled supports the shimming and setting-gauge information. Water-pump coverage includes shaft and bearing removal, seal inspection, and reassembly.

Transmission, PTO, and Belt Pulley

The PTO chapter covers the shaft, seals, bearings, and adapter. Belt-pulley service includes matched drive and driven gears, bearing replacement, and adjustment using the housing gasket thickness.

Hydraulic Pump and Lift Controls

The hydraulic section documents the Scotch yoke piston pump, pump base, valve chambers, intake and exhaust control valves, and ram cylinder. Hydraulic Control Linkage shows how the draft- and position-control components fit together.

Adjustment instructions distinguish external lever settings from internal linkage adjustments after overhaul. A service bulletin explains how a failed lift-cover pin can allow fragments and the connecting rod to enter the differential or hydraulic pump, damaging those assemblies.

Working on heavy tractor hydraulics or rotating PTO assemblies presents serious pinch and crush hazards. Always relieve hydraulic pressure and verify that the tractor is fully supported on proper safety stands before beginning any teardown.

Rear Axle, Steering Gear, and Brake Data

Rear-axle coverage includes hub removal, axle-bearing replacement, differential gear-case inspection, and drive-pinion bearing adjustment.

The main steering chapter describes the earlier recirculating-ball unit; a later bulletin explains the revised sector supports and associated panel and drag-link changes. The chapter warns that allowing the ball nut to reach the end of the worm during disassembly can damage the ball retainer.

Brake coverage provides lining dimensions and pedal free-play specifications, with backing-plate handling included in rear-axle service; it is not a separate brake-overhaul procedure.

Starter, Ignition, and Generator Conversion

Starter instructions include brush and bearing inspection, armature handling, and Bendix disassembly. Ignition attachments cover angle-drive distributor installation, timing-light checks, and automatic advance.

The generator-conversion attachment includes an installation wiring diagram for 9N and 2N tractors. Its regulator references differ: the bulletin specifies 8N-10505-C, while Attachment 8 and its drawing identify 8N-10505-B.

A Preview of Engine Fits and Cold Valve Clearances

These examples are a small selection of the engine measurements included in the manual.

The engine fits table gives an original camshaft-to-bearing clearance of 0.001 to 0.002 inch and a 0.004-inch wear limit. Its clearances are based on parts at 70°F.

The 8N valve-clearance bulletin specifies 0.010 to 0.012 inch for intake and 0.014 to 0.016 inch for exhaust, checked cold at approximately 70°F. These are valve-stem-to-tappet clearances, distinct from valve-stem-to-guide fits.
