Many Mitchell illustrations are credited to Ford Motor Co., but the archive is not a single Ford-published service manual.

Primary workshop coverage is for the 2003 Mustang and Cobra. Selected sections identify 2002–04 or 2003–04 applications; six large PDFs cover the 2004 Cobra 4.6L (4V) engine; and earlier supplements address the 2000 Cobra and certain 2000–01 4.6L VIN V systems. General Mustang articles may also cover 3.8L V6, 4.6L SOHC/DOHC or supercharged engines, automatic transmission, solid rear axles, and coupe or convertible equipment. Match the article heading to the vehicle configuration before applying a repair procedure.

One repair warning is especially important: the 4.6L timing section identifies the engine as non-free-wheeling. Incorrect crankshaft-to-camshaft synchronization can allow valve-to-piston contact, and the manual supplies copper-link and timing-mark diagrams for the indexed positions.

The T56 six-speed chapter includes identification, fluid service, removal and installation, and internal repair of shafts, gears, synchronizers, shift forks and rails, housings, bearings, and seals. Endplay measurement and shim selection are included with reassembly and operational checks. Related chapters add clutch-drag, slip, chatter, vibration, hard-shift, and noise diagnosis.

Rear-axle sections are separated into Ford 7.5-inch, solid 8.8-inch, and Cobra 8.8-inch IRS assemblies. They cover axle shafts or halfshafts, pinion and differential service, Traction-Lok clutch packs, contact patterns, pinion setup, backlash, runout, bearing preload, and shim selection. The collapsible pinion spacer and related adjustments are treated as a matched setup; incorrect reuse or setup can damage bearings and gear teeth.

Chassis, Electrical, HVAC, and Body Systems

Brake coverage separates four-wheel ABS without traction control from the traction-control system and includes scan-tool communication, DTC and active-command tables, warning-lamp diagnosis, bleeding, Hydro-Boost testing, and disc/parking-brake repair. Steering material covers CII/CIII pumps, racks, hoses, pressure/flow tests, vacuum purging, and steering-effort diagnosis. Suspension sections include the modified MacPherson-strut front end and Cobra IRS work on hubs, bearings, control arms, toe links, halfshafts, and subframe alignment.

Electrical chapters provide 2000 and 2003 system wiring diagrams for power distribution, starting/charging, lighting, anti-theft, ABS, SRS, windows, locks, convertible top, climate control, and engine management. The 2003 engine-performance diagrams distinguish 3.8L, 4.6L SOHC, 4.6L DOHC, and 4.6L supercharged circuits. The Ford-published portion consists of a 240-page 2004 Mustang Owner’s Guide and a 48-page 2004 Model Year Scheduled Maintenance Guide. The Owner’s Guide covers vehicle operation, restraints, towing, roadside procedures, fuses, Motorcraft references, refill capacities, and lubricants. The maintenance booklet is a general 2004 Ford/Lincoln/Mercury guide rather than a Mustang-only publication. It contains owner checks, multi-point inspections, normal schedules, special operating schedules for towing or heavy loads, extended idling, and dusty or off-road use, plus maintenance records with dealer-stamp fields.

The standard Owner’s Guide directs Cobra owners to a separate SVT Cobra Owner’s Guide supplement; that supplement is not included. The wiring PDFs cover 2000 and 2003, not a complete 2004 wiring manual. The blower-porting document and recall note are supplemental material rather than Ford workshop chapters.

For under-car, fuel, brake, suspension, A/C, or SRS repair, use properly rated support equipment and follow the system-specific depressurization, electrical-isolation, refrigerant-handling, and restraint-system precautions in the relevant article.
