Vehicle Identification and Maintenance

Schedule A and Schedule B cover maintenance by operating conditions. The maintenance group also specifies lubricants and fluid capacities and gives jump-starting, hoisting, and towing procedures for the applicable drivetrains.

Engine Timing and Fuel-System Diagnosis

The 2.5L four-cylinder chapter covers timing-belt, camshaft, and intermediate-shaft timing. The 3.9L Magnum V6 and 5.2L Magnum V8 chapters cover timing chains, hydraulic tappets, cylinder-block inspection, and oil-pump service. Engine specifications include bearing clearances and wear limits.

Fuel-system procedures distinguish single-port injection on the four-cylinder from multi-port injection on the V6 and V8. For the 42RH and 46RH automatics, the clutch-and-band application chart shows which elements are active in each range, helping narrow down a shift complaint before teardown. Hydraulic and air-pressure tests, stall tests, and cooler-flow checks complement the shift linkage, throttle-valve cable, and band adjustments. Overhaul coverage includes the valve body, clutch packs, planetary geartrain, and selective snap-ring and spacer charts.

The NP231 chapter includes linkage adjustment, in-vehicle service, and assembly views for overhaul, with differences between versions with and without synchronizer components. For the automatic overdrive unit, Chrysler warns that unsupported weight can damage the intermediate shaft. If the planetary and overrunning-clutch splines lose alignment, the unit may require disassembly. The manual identifies Alignment Tool 6227-2 for this work.

Axle procedures include pinion depth, bearing preload, backlash, gear-tooth contact patterns, and Trac-Loc differential service. The front-axle section illustrates Gauge Set C-3715-B for the 7-1/4-inch assembly. The axle procedures caution against collapsing the preload spacer too early or loading the differential bearing cage during installation. Propeller-shaft coverage includes vibration diagnosis and U-joint replacement. Steering coverage includes 4WD recirculating-ball gear overhaul and replacement procedures for the 2WD rack-and-pinion assembly.

Brake Faults, Wiring, and Cab Service

Fuel Pressure and NV3500 Gear Ratio Examples

For the gasoline V6 and V8, the fuel-delivery chapter specifies approximately 35–45 psi at idle and a minimum of 24 psi for five minutes after warm shutdown during the leak-down test.

The NV3500 gear-ratio tables identify a 4.01:1 first gear in the original gearset and a 3.49:1 first gear in the close-ratio version. The parts-ordering note identifies the transmission assembly part number as the reference for choosing between the two versions.
