Model Coverage and Publication Scope
The base manual is the first-edition March 1988 CW50W service manual. Its identification and specification sections list model code 3ES1 and engine starting number 3ES-000101. The included May 1989 CW50TA supplement covers model codes 3MX1 and 3MX3, beginning with engine number 3MX-000101.
The CW50TA material is a supplement rather than a second full overhaul manual. It adds the changed model identification, general specifications, spark-arrester procedure, rear-shock preload adjustment, tire information, and a dedicated CW50TA wiring diagram. Unchanged repair procedures remain in the CW50W manual, so the two publications belong together.
Both versions use the air-cooled, single-cylinder two-stroke engine with Yamaha Autolube, electric and kick starting, the Teikei Y12P carburetor, a dry centrifugal automatic clutch, and automatic V-belt transmission. The manual’s model-code and engine-number pages help separate the 3ES and 3MX builds before parts, specifications, or variant-specific procedures are selected.
Service, Repair, and Overhaul Content
The periodic inspection chapter includes cover removal, idle-speed and throttle-cable adjustment, spark-plug and ignition-timing checks, Autolube pump air bleeding, compression measurement, oil service, air-filter cleaning, fuel and exhaust inspection, V-belt inspection, and spark-arrester cleaning. Carburetion coverage includes a labeled sectional view plus carburetor removal, disassembly, inspection, assembly, installation, and fuel-cock testing. Chassis chapters cover wheel and drum-brake repair, axle, bearing, and seal inspection, handlebar and steering-shaft removal, front-fork disassembly, steering-bearing service, and rear-shock removal and inspection.
Electrical Diagnostics, Diagrams, and Shop Data
The electrical chapter is organized for fault isolation. It includes the CW50W circuit diagram, connection and switch checks, bulb testing, an ignition-and-starting quick-reference chart, connector-location views, starter-motor and relay inspection, switch tests, spark-plug cap and ignition-coil checks, source- and pickup-coil tests, wire-harness inspection, and CDI-unit replacement. Several cautions are specific enough to prevent expensive repair errors. Cleaned bearings must not be spun dry with compressed air because this damages the bearing surfaces. During crankcase assembly, the crankshaft itself must not be struck, and grease applied around brake-cam parts must be kept off the brake shoes to avoid contaminating the linings. Electrical couplers and bulb sockets must be handled by the housing rather than pulled by their leads, which can tear wires from the terminals.
Engine, clutch, brake, battery, hot-exhaust, and electrical work involves rotating parts, stored spring force, corrosive electrolyte, heat, and short-circuit risk. Follow the warnings and cautions in the Yamaha publication and standard shop safety practices before starting any repair.
