How the Manuals Work Together
The YFM80WP publication is a supplement rather than a stand-alone repair manual. It adds the service changes and data for model code 5TH1, then directs the technician to the earlier YFM80M/YFM80MC supplement and YFM80(D) base manual for complete procedures. Both companion publications are included here, so the WP updates and the underlying overhaul information stay together.
Yamaha produced these publications primarily for its dealers and qualified mechanics and assumes a basic understanding of mechanical repair. This set is therefore best suited to professional technicians or experienced owners with equivalent shop skills and test equipment.
Repair and Diagnostic Depth
The engine chapter goes well beyond periodic service. It covers valve-guide replacement and reaming, valve-seat cutting and lapping, cylinder measurement and rebore criteria, piston-ring and crankshaft inspection, transmission engagement checks, and oil-pump inspection. Reassembly material documents clutch plate order and height selection, middle-gear shim selection, U-joint bearing installation, the transmission check required before the crankcase screws are torqued, and cam-sprocket timing-mark alignment.
Troubleshooting is organized by symptom as well as by circuit. Mechanical charts address hard starting, poor idle or high-speed performance, drivetrain noise or lockup, shifting faults, clutch slip or drag, overheating, weak braking, shock-absorber problems, and unstable handling. Electrical charts isolate no-spark, no-crank, no-charge, and neutral-indicator faults through the relevant switches, relays, coils, wiring, and component tests.
Drawings, Specifications, and Service Tools
The 12 main assembly exploded views include the clutch, cylinder and cylinder head, carburetor, steering system, shaft drive, and starter motor. Four additional YFM80WP job diagrams cover the seat/front panel, front fender, rear fender, and fuel tank. Seven cable-routing illustrations trace the throttle and brake cables, main harness, battery and CDI leads, and the fuel and breather hoses.
Reference tables provide component-specific torque specifications, lubrication points and diagrams, fluid capacities, carburetor settings, inspection limits, wear criteria, and electrical test values. The manual warns that spinning cleaned bearings with compressed air can damage their surfaces. It also calls out battery-breather routing because electrolyte or gas discharged against the frame can cause structural and cosmetic damage. Follow Yamaha's cautions when supporting the ATV for wheel or brake repair and when performing starting-circuit tests that can produce sparks.
The full wiring sheets are labeled for YFM80(D) and YFM80M/YFM80MC. The WP supplement provides updated WP electrical specifications and cable routing rather than a separately titled YFM80WP wiring sheet.
