• Diesel engine: Step-by-step cylinder-head, valve, piston and crankshaft repair procedures, plus compression testing, valve-clearance adjustment and component wear limits.

• Fuel and cooling: Injector testing, fuel shut-off solenoid replacement, cooling-system leak checks, thermostat testing and water-pump service.

Engine Testing and Injection-Pump Scope

Engine specifications cover diesel fuel grades, lubricant viscosity, component clearances and wear limits. Compression testing specifies the JT01682 gauge assembly with the JDG472 adapter; injector pressure and spray-pattern testing uses the D01109AA tester and D01110AA adapters.

Injection-pump limits: The fuel injection pump and governor are serviced as complete assemblies, with removal covered here. Replacement installation and timing instructions are supplied with the replacement assemblies; this manual does not provide an internal pump or governor overhaul procedure.

The factory-sealed fast-idle and torque-capsule settings are not adjustable. The manual restricts pump and governor removal and installation to factory-trained technicians.

Domestic and Export Electrical Differences

Separate Main Electrical Schematics distinguish early Domestic, late Domestic and Export configurations. Connector information and the Ignition Switch Circuit Logic diagrams support tracing a fault through the appropriate circuit instead of relying on a diagram for another configuration.

Hood-switch circuit: Late Domestic models use a blue jumper at the hood-switch connector, while Export models use a hood switch. A missing or defective jumper can interrupt switched electrical power, but the unswitched and headlight circuits remain exceptions.

The ignition interlock module is diagnosed and replaced as an assembly; its internal components are not repairable, apart from the replaceable fuses. Reverse Implement Option circuits and fuel shut-off solenoid pull-in and hold-in tests receive separate diagnostic coverage.

Transaxle, Steering and Hydraulic Fault Tracing

Internal transaxle coverage extends to the pump and motor rotating groups, free wheel valves, differential and axle components. The Brake System Troubleshooting Chart separates operating symptoms from linkage and internal brake checks; internal wet disk brake access requires transaxle disassembly.

The manual warns that nicks in precision valve-plate, center-case and cylinder-block surfaces can cause premature transaxle failure.

The Hydraulic Schematic shows how charge-pump flow supplies steering before the lift circuit. Keeping this schematic and the electrical drawings at the workbench supports tracing fluid paths and wiring alongside the relevant tests.

Hydraulic safety information addresses escaping pressurized fluid, which can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury.

Deck Configurations and Spindle Repair

Attachment sections distinguish the 38-inch deck, 44-inch rear-discharge deck and its mulching configuration, 48-inch Convertible deck, and 54-inch deck. The Spindle Cross-Sectional View supports identifying the shaft, bearings and related components during spindle service.

The 44-inch spindle instructions warn that clamping the shaft’s hex end in a vise can damage it and cause improper blade operation.

Preview of Compression, Head-Bolt and PTO Specifications

Engine test and assembly data: Standard compression for the Yanmar 2V78 is 3040 ± 196 kPa (441 ± 28 psi), with a minimum cranking speed of 250 rpm. Cylinder-head bolt torque is 48–51 N·m (35–37 lb-ft), specified with lightly oiled threads.

PTO adjustment data: The electric PTO clutch section specifies an armature-to-rotor air gap of 0.31–0.46 mm (0.012–0.018 in.), alongside the inspection and adjustment procedure.
