M-Class Controls, Driving Systems and Owner Procedures

Access, Climate Controls and On-Board Menus

Opening and comfort sections cover mechanical emergency access, tailgate opening-angle memory and emergency release, convenience opening and closing, and step-by-step side-window and sunroof reset procedures. Seat heating, ventilation and memory functions are distinguished by equipment level.

Driving guidance distinguishes gasoline and diesel starting procedures and explains hill-start assist, kickdown and AMG C/S/M programs. Transmission troubleshooting covers symptoms such as reduced acceleration and emergency running mode.

The 4MATIC section explains permanent all-wheel drive with ESP® and 4ETS. Optional Off-Road Pro coverage describes the center and rear differential locks, their automatic and manual operation, and related transfer-case messages. Driver-assistance, off-road and trailer-towing sections explain operating limits and equipment-specific restrictions.

The 4MATIC cautions identify towing with one axle raised and unsuitable dynamometer testing as potential causes of transfer-case, drivetrain or brake-system damage. Off-Road Pro differential locks are unsuitable for paved roads, where locking sharply restricts steering and can cause drivetrain tension and chatter.

Owner Checks, Warning Tables and Technical References

Display-message and warning-lamp tables organize restraint, brake, engine, lighting, tire and vehicle faults by problem, cause, consequence and response. These tables help connect a warning to the prescribed owner action or workshop referral before repair work is planned.

Fluid references cover approved engine oils and viscosity, gasoline and diesel requirements, AdBlue®, coolant, brake fluid, R134a refrigerant with PAG lubricant, and washer fluid. Contaminated or diluted AdBlue® can damage the BlueTEC exhaust aftertreatment system.

Separate tables cover fluid capacities, wheel/tire combinations, emergency spare wheels, vehicle dimensions and roof loads. Illustrations identify VIN and engine-number locations. Tire-pressure guidance points to the vehicle-specific B-pillar placard and fuel-filler-flap tables rather than treating one pressure as universal.

Occupant-safety coverage distinguishes adaptive dual-stage front air bags, side and window-curtain air bags, Emergency Tensioning Devices and belt-force limiters. OCS information applies to U.S.-market equipment, while BabySmart™ coverage addresses Canadian equipment.

Manual Scope and Separate Instructions

This is an operator’s manual, not a workshop repair manual. Its scope is vehicle operation, owner checks, driver-level troubleshooting, roadside procedures and repair planning rather than component teardown or overhaul.

Detailed service schedules are in the separate Service Booklet. Hybrid-specific operation and safety information requires the separate HYBRID Supplemental Operating Instructions. Fuse-box access is covered here; fuse ratings are listed in the allocation chart stored with the vehicle tool kit.

Owner bulb-replacement instructions are limited to the listed replaceable bulbs; Xenon bulb replacement is assigned to a qualified specialist workshop. Repair work involving SRS/OCS components, interconnected electronics, 4MATIC drivetrain or brake systems, and refrigerant circuits should be handled by qualified technicians.

Selected Oil Capacities and DSR Settings

The engine-oil-and-filter capacity table lists 9.0 US qt (8.5 L) for the ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, compared with 8.5 US qt (8.0 L) for the gasoline ML 350 and ML 350 4MATIC.

For U.S. vehicles equipped with Downhill Speed Regulation, the DSR Speed menu provides a downhill-speed setting from 3 to 10 mph in 1 mph increments.
