The supplements are update documents rather than stand-alone repair manuals. The 18-page E/EC publication adds identification, specification, and cable-routing changes to the D/DC manual. The 1997 supplement adds revised identification, specifications, carburetor fuel-level information, and wiring data to the 1996 manual. It distinguishes model code 4TX2 from 5AR1 for CH/A markets, while its wiring diagram is specifically marked “except CH, A.” The 1999 supplement must be used with both earlier 4TX publications.
Factory Procedures and Late-Model Changes
At the bench, the manuals cover valve-shim selection, compression and oil-pressure testing, crankshaft and connecting-rod oil-clearance inspection, timing-chain and balancer indexing, clutch-pack inspection, and transmission gear and shift-fork checks. Chassis procedures include static wheel balancing, brake hydraulic repair, steering-bearing adjustment, and front-fork damper service.
The 1999 update is particularly important when identifying late hardware. It documents the BDSR38 carburetors, a clutch pack with different first and last friction plates, the odometer/twin-trip/clock combination meter, the front-wheel speed sensor, and the ignitor-controlled electric fuel-pump system.
Routing matters on these motorcycles. The early manual includes the California canister and emission-hose layout, while the later publications map the throttle and clutch cables, brake hoses, speed-sensor lead, fuel hoses, carburetor heater hoses, and main wiring harness.
Yamaha tool references include the 90890-01312 fuel-level gauge, 90890-01325 radiator-cap tester with 90890-01352 adapter, 90890-01326 T-handle with 90890-01465 damper-rod holder, and 90890-04019 valve-spring compressor with 90890-04108 attachment.
Diagrams, Tools, and Repair Notes
Named electrical material includes the TDM850D/DC circuit diagram, ignition-system circuit diagram, and electric starting circuit operation chart. Later coverage adds the TPS self-diagnosis circuit diagram, TDM850 '97 wiring diagram except CH/A, and 1999 fuel-pump system circuit and operation diagram.
The engine section warns that main and connecting-rod bearing shells must remain in their original positions; mixing them can alter oil clearance and cause engine damage. The front-fork chapter also cautions that excessive separating force can damage the oil seal, bushings, and oil-lock piece.
Engine removal, brake hydraulic work, fuel-system testing, hot cooling-system service, and gas-charged shock handling require proper support, pressure release, electrical isolation, and fire-safe workshop practices.
