1992–1996 Jaguar XJS Technical Guide Collection (P/N S-79)

This collection brings together Jaguar's 1992 Technical Introduction, 1993–1995 Model Year Updates and XJS-1995.25 Technical Guide for XJS Coupe and Convertible models, including 2+2 variants. Publication numbers are S-71, S-79, S-83, S-92 and JJM 10 15 06/52. These technical supplements cover system changes and selected service operations; full overhaul work requires the separate Service Manual.

AJ6, AJ16 and V12 Engine Systems

Engine coverage follows the transition from the 5.3L to the 6.0L V12 and from the 4.0L AJ6 to the AJ16. Chapters describe intake, cooling and exhaust revisions, fuel injection control and engine management interfaces.

The AJ6 section explains the DTC and operating conditions required for adaptive idle fueling. AJ16 material adds camshaft sensor installation alignment, oxygen sensor assignment and PDU setup requirements, plus coil-on-plug ignition, knock control, EGR and catalyst monitoring.

The 1995 update distinguishes AJ16 OBD II from the V12's continued OBD I system. Detailed OBD II fault-finding and repair procedures, including the complete DTC listing, are referred to the separate Service Manual.

Transmission, Brake and Climate-Control Changes

The ZF 4HP 24E sections explain operating modes, shift control and interlocks. Manual gearbox coverage describes the synchronized gear train, hydraulic clutch and twin-mass flywheel. Hydra-Matic material adds a transmission cutaway, solenoid descriptions, adaptive learning and transmission fault-code information.

Later updates cover outboard rear brakes and the Teves Mk IV-GI ABS installation, with hydraulic circuit and ABS pin-out drawings. The HFC air-conditioning chapter describes R134a components and service connections; early carryover CFC installations are outside that chapter's detailed coverage.

Body Electronics and Service Precautions

Body chapters describe the redesigned trunk lid, Coupe glazing, revised door mirrors, memory sports seats, center console and instrument-pack/trip-computer changes. Convertible material also identifies the X-bracing as unsuitable for jacking.

Security coverage distinguishes the early 19K transmitter coding procedure from the later integrated system's JDS programming requirements. Multi-function unit tests check inputs and cycle outputs separately, helping technicians distinguish switch-input problems from output-circuit faults before replacing components.

Service notes identify JD 174 for the evaporative flange locking ring, JD 175 for in-tank hose clamps and JD 177 for fuse connector pins. Fuel connector notes address O-ring damage and scratched tubing; another electrical precaution explains that modifying an ultrasonic harness splice destroys the splice.

The 1993 booklet contains the 4.0L Engine Management System and Transmission Control wiring diagrams, each spread across two pages, followed by wiring color codes. Both diagrams are marked provisional; Jaguar directs accurate circuit diagnosis to the separate Electrical Guide.

Relay identification charts, ECU location views and component-panel layouts cover the changing installations. Sumitomo, Multilock and Econoseal connector descriptions help identify the harness connections, while cruise-control and ABS references explain their diagnostic interfaces.

A Preview of Fuel and Sensor Specifications

These examples represent a small selection of the engine-management data in the collection.

For the 1993 AJ6 fuel system, regulated fuel pressure varies from 36 psi at idle to 44 psi at full throttle, according to intake manifold pressure.

AJ16 specifications include a crankshaft position sensor-to-rotor air gap of 0.020–0.040 in. and a 16-ohm coil resistance for the white-band twin-spray fuel injectors.
