The launch guide explains the vehicle’s construction and operation; the updates document subsequent changes. Use these guides to identify systems, model-year differences, component locations, network relationships, diagnostic equipment, and special tools before repair work.

Coverage limits: These are technical overviews, not a step-by-step repair manual. The updates include shared-model material, so some sections apply only to XJ Series or S-TYPE; follow the original model headings and captions.

The launch volume refers detailed powertrain coverage to a separate AJ26 engine and transmission technical guide. Servicing requires the applicable Service Manual or JTIS, while structural repairs require the XK Supplement to the Body and Paint Repair Manual.

Search and navigation: Text search is available in the 2001 update; the launch and 1999 guides do not have searchable text. Embedded bookmarks cover the first two publications, with some inactive entries; the 2001 update has no bookmarks. Small labels in the electrical diagrams are readable when enlarged.

One printable, English-language 218-page PDF contains all three publications. The total includes their original covers, preliminary and closing pages, two notes pages, and two blank pages.

Launch Systems, AJ27 Changes and Occupant Safety

The selected topics below outline the main technical coverage rather than reproduce the complete contents. Additional subjects include instrument-cluster language selection and garage-door-opener hardware.

• Body and convertible top: Coupe and convertible structures, jacking and towing points, hydraulic top operation, door-glass relearning, powered seats, trim, and engine-compartment and trunk layouts.

• Powertrain installation: AJ-V8 mountings, cooling and air intake, ZF 5HP24 transmission controls and oil cooling, driveshaft, 14HU final drive, fuel delivery, EVAP, and exhaust layouts.

• Chassis and brakes: Front and rear suspension assemblies, wheel-speed sensing, brake modulation, stability and traction control, parking brake, and speed-sensitive power-assisted steering.

Powertrain, Fuel and Chassis Reference

The launch guide relates selector interlocks and TCM/CAN communication to the installed transmission. Its filled-for-life 14HU final-drive description identifies the output bearing, output seal, and pinion oil seal as the serviceable components.

Coupe and convertible fuel-tank views distinguish their mounting arrangements. EVAP plumbing, catalytic downpipes, and oxygen-sensor locations are shown alongside supporting vehicle dimensions, component weights, fluid data, Sport tire pressures, and road-speed/engine-speed figures. Carry-over components from the 95MY sedan are identified.

The climate-control section explains heater circulation, compressor control, sensors, and A/CCM self-diagnostics. Mirror memory, seat modules, wiper and washer layouts, instrumentation, security, and in-car entertainment receive component-level descriptions.

Convertible Top and Door-Glass Precautions

Top coverage follows the pump, hoses, operating cylinders, hydraulic latching, ROOF-switch inputs, SCP control, and rear-quarter-glass sequencing. It includes step-by-step emergency manual-operation instructions, with manual lowering designated as a dealer function.

Forcing manual lowering before the over-center links are released can severely damage the top frame or linkages. Disconnecting the battery disables automatic glass-drop operation, creating a risk of door-seal damage if a door is opened with its glass raised.

Diagnostic Equipment, Schematics and Tools

The launch diagnostic section distinguishes universal scan-tool access over ISO 9141/2 from Jaguar PDU access to CAN and SCP systems. The Multi Protocol Adapter description covers data logging, diagnostic trip recording, and control-module flash programming.

Illustrations include Coupe and Convertible Body Shells, Cooling System Diagram, ZF 5HP24 Transmission Unit, Battery Power Distribution, Refrigeration System Component Layout, and Advanced Restraints System Diagram. Lighting-control schematics and diagnostic-connector pin assignments provide further electrical reference.

1999 Engine Management and Steering Changes

The AJ27 discussion distinguishes normally aspirated changes from supercharged applications; the continuously variable VVT system is not fitted to the supercharged engines described. Oil-control diagrams, revised camshaft sensing, throttle fail-safe operation, and ignition feedback explain how the changed systems work.

XK8-specific ORVR coverage shows relocated canisters and revised tank plumbing. The steering section identifies the Sport version of ZF Servotronic 2 with its dedicated PASCM, while convertible coverage explains B/C-post bracing and associated rear-speaker mounting changes.

2001 Restraints and Electrical Revisions

Advanced-restraint components are not interchangeable with earlier model years. The passenger-seat weight-sensing service assembly requires WDS initialization, and the seat-mounted side-airbag module must be correctly located in its deployment chute.

Airbag and seat-belt work requires the isolation and handling precautions in the applicable Jaguar service documentation. Removal, installation, adjustment, torque, calibration, and final safety checks must follow that documentation.

Other XK updates include reverse park control, SLCM and key-fob changes, revised lighting, module functions, and harness routing. The guide also explains the EVAP leak-test port, relocated fuel-level sensor, and rear-muffler/body-bracket compatibility.

Selected AJ27 Timing and Injector-Air Data

For the normally aspirated AJ27, the VVT section specifies a continuously variable inlet-timing range of 48° ± 2° of crankshaft rotation. Its diagrams explain the oil-controlled advance and retard mechanism.

The injector-air section describes a change to 50% air-assist control-valve duty cycle at a coolant temperature of 60°C, with the valve fully closed at 70°C. These figures describe engine-control operation rather than manual adjustment settings.
