The 28OCT95 issue supersedes CTM4 dated 24JAN90. It incorporates revised application data and factory procedures for engine lifting, cold valve adjustment, cylinder-head work, oil-cooler and bypass configurations, water-pump sealing, aftercooler service, turbocharger bearing checks, and fuel-pump timing.

CTM4 is a component manual, not the machine technical manual. Deere directs the technician to the applicable machine publication for in-chassis access, components serviceable without engine removal, and engine removal and installation. Its technical electrical coverage consists of engine tune-up checks and an air-filter restriction-indicator switch test rather than machine-level wiring diagrams.
Fuel-Pump Limits and Workshop References
The fuel-injection chapters cover pump identification, removal and installation, drive-shaft and drive-gear inspection, timing, and external adjustments. They do not provide an internal injection-pump overhaul: Deere directs Roto Diesel/Lucas CAV and Stanadyne pump testing, adjustment, and repair to an authorized ADS diesel injection repair station. Nozzle coverage goes further, documenting removal, test-bench checks, disassembly, inspection, cleaning, reassembly, adjustment, sealing, and installation.
Specified tooling includes the JT07158 TIME TRAC kit for dynamic timing and the JDG670A drive-gear puller. Group 199 supplies fabrication drawings for the DFRG2 injection-pump timing-mark transfer tool and DFRG3 cylinder-liner holding fixture. Technical views cover the engine sectional arrangement, 4239T lubrication flow, standard-flow and high-flow cooling circuits, the crankshaft gear-driven auxiliary drive, and operating layouts for the covered injection-pump families.
The manual flags two easy-to-miss rebuild traps. Installing the revised short oil-bypass valve in the older deep block bore leaves the valve open and sends unfiltered oil through the engine; fitting the earlier long valve in the later shallow bore prevents bypass flow. Upper and lower idler-gear bushings also use different lubrication designs, and interchanging them causes bushing failure.
Engine handling requires rated lifting and repair-stand equipment. Fuel-system pressure must be relieved before lines are disconnected, and the nozzle-test cautions address the risk of high-pressure diesel spray penetrating skin.
