Workshop Depth and Intended Use
Kawasaki states that this manual is designed primarily for trained mechanics in a properly equipped shop, while providing enough detail for owners with basic mechanical knowledge, proper tool skills, and workshop experience to perform basic maintenance and repair. Advanced DFI, ABS, immobilizer, and internal-engine procedures rely on the specified test equipment and special tools.
Across 17 chapters, the coverage moves from scheduled maintenance into system-level repair. The engine-top-end material addresses compression testing, valve-clearance inspection and adjustment, valve-guide and seat repair, camshaft wear and runout checks, exhaust-butterfly cable adjustment, and clean-air system testing. Lubrication work includes oil-pressure measurement, oil-pump and relief-valve service, and the Engine Oil Flow Chart. Final-drive data distinguishes the factory chain specifications used on early and later ZR750NB/PB machines.
DFI, ABS, and Electrical Diagnosis
DFI troubleshooting is organized around Kawasaki service codes and component-level tests. Named circuits include the main and subthrottle sensors, intake and atmospheric pressure sensors, crankshaft, camshaft, speed, vehicle-down, and oxygen sensors, as well as the exhaust-butterfly actuator. Separate procedures cover the fuel pump, injectors, ECU power supply, input/output voltage, resistance, peak voltage, pressure, and flow specifications.
ABS diagnosis is kept separate from conventional hydraulic brake service. The manual covers pre-diagnosis, indicator-light code reading and clearing, sensor signal and wiring faults, hydraulic-unit checks, and post-service brake testing. Its ABS self-diagnosis does not identify ordinary mechanical problems such as worn discs or uneven pad wear. The precision-set hydraulic unit is treated as a sealed replacement assembly, not a component to disassemble and repair.
Electrical chapters cover battery activation and charging, alternator and regulator/rectifier testing, ignition and starter repair, electronic meter-unit checks, immobilizer key registration, switches, relays, and fuse circuits.
Specifications, Tools, and Repair Cautions
Reference sections provide component-specific torque tables, locking-agent and sealant callouts, fluid types and capacities, clearance and wear limits, bearing-selection data, suspension and fork-oil specifications, wheel and tire limits, and electrical test values. The manual flags two easy-to-miss repair hazards. Turning the crankshaft with the camshaft-chain tensioner removed can disturb valve timing and damage the valves. Reversing battery polarity can damage the ABS hydraulic unit. It also calls for precautions around residual fuel pressure and requires complete brake-line bleeding whenever an ABS hydraulic-unit fitting or bleed valve has been opened; trapped air reduces braking performance and can interfere with ABS operation.
