Yamaha Manual Features & Content Preview

  • 497-page PDF set of Yamaha factory publications — Complete Service Manual 5EL1-AE1: 364 pages; Supplementary Service Manual 5KS4-AE1: 52 pages; Supplementary Service Manual 5KS4-AE2: 44 pages; English Assembly Manual 5KS-28107-E0: 24 pages; multilingual Assembly Manual 5KS-28107-30: 12 pages; manual list: 1 page.
  • Model-code coverage is clearly separated by publication: XVS1100 5EL1 for Europe, 5EL2 for D/A/FIN markets, and 5EL3 for Australia; XVS1100A 5KS4 for Europe and 5KS5 for Australia; XVS1100A 5KSN for EUR and XVS1100AR 5KSM for OCE.
  • Engine repair coverage runs from removal and installation through cylinder heads, camshafts and rocker arms, valves, cylinders and pistons, timing drive, clutch, generator and starter clutch, oil pump, crankcase, crankshaft, connecting rods, transmission, and shift mechanism.
  • Shaft-drive procedures include middle-drive and final-drive disassembly, universal-joint service, bearing and oil-seal inspection, ring-gear and middle-gear backlash measurement, shim selection, and pinion-to-ring-gear alignment.
  • Chassis sections cover wheel and brake-disc service, wheel balancing, brake pads, master cylinders and calipers, hydraulic bleeding, front-fork overhaul, steering-head work, swingarm removal, and rear-shock inspection.
  • Carburetion and electrical chapters include carburetor synchronization, fuel-level and throttle-position-sensor adjustment, air-induction checks, ignition, starting, charging, lighting, signal, fuel-pump and carburetor-heater diagnosis, plus system-specific fault tracing.
  • Dealer setup material covers the 2000 XVS1100A crate-assembly and predelivery process, while the later supplement adds immobilizer key-code registration, self-diagnosis error indications, revised cable routing, and separate EUR/OCE wiring diagrams.

Full Service and Overhaul Scope

The 364-page base manual carries the full repair procedures for the 1.063 L air-cooled SOHC V-twin and its five-speed shaft-drive powertrain. Each removal or disassembly section starts with an exploded assembly view and job chart, followed by the inspection, measurement, reassembly, and final adjustment information needed for workshop work. The engine chapter covers cylinder-head repair, valve and guide inspection, piston and cylinder service, crankcase separation, crankshaft and connecting-rod work, transmission inspection, clutch repair, and oil-pump service. This is full overhaul coverage, not just routine maintenance.

Periodic service information is equally specific. It includes valve-clearance adjustment, carburetor synchronization, ignition-timing and compression checks, engine and final-drive lubrication service, steering-head adjustment, spoke inspection, battery charging, and brake-system bleeding. The specification chapters place the related torque tables, clearances, wear limits, lubrication data, fluid capacities, carburetor settings, and electrical test values alongside the covered assemblies.

Model-Specific Supplements and Dealer Setup

The publication sequence consists of the October 1998 XVS1100 (L) base manual, the December 1999 XVS1100A supplement and dealer setup manual, and the October 2002 XVS1100A (R) update. The supplements are not stand-alone books. Yamaha directs the reader to use 5KS4-AE1 with the 5EL1-AE1 base manual, and 5KS4-AE2 with both earlier publications. This set includes the entire chain, so revised model data can be read beside the original repair procedure it updates.

Supplement 5KS4-AE1 documents the 5KS4/5KS5 chassis and service changes, including revised cable routing, maintenance information, front and rear brake layouts, front-fork disassembly and assembly, steering-head work, tire data, and control adjustments. Supplement 5KS4-AE2 covers the 5KSN/5KSM electrical update, with immobilizer components, key registration, indicator-light error codes, lighting revisions, self-diagnosis checks, and full model-specific wiring diagrams.

The English assembly manual is a separate dealer setup publication for the 2000 XVS1100A. It covers installation and inspection of crate-removed components such as the handlebar, front wheel and fender, front brake master cylinder, controls, clutch cable, mirrors, battery, and exterior covers. Cable and lead routing, battery commissioning, fluid-level checks, brake bleeding, control adjustment, lighting checks, and final predelivery inspection are included. The 12-page 5KS-28107-30 file is the French/German/Spanish/Italian assembly publication, not the primary service manual.

Diagrams, Tools, and Repair-Critical Details

Illustrated reference material includes engine lubrication diagrams, cable-routing views, ignition and electric-starting circuit diagrams, fuel-pump and immobilizer circuits, exploded component views, and the complete EUR/OCE wiring sheets. Yamaha special tools are identified by number, including the crankcase separating tool 90890-01135, vacuum gauge 90890-03094, middle-drive bearing-retainer wrench 90890-04137, and fork-seal driver weight and adapter 90890-01367/90890-01381.

The shaft-drive chapter calls out a critical repair trap: the middle-gear collapsible collar must be renewed after driven-shaft removal, and overtightening or hammering the universal-joint yoke can distort it and invalidate the backlash setup. During fork repair, the manual warns against scratching the inner tube, contaminating the assembly, or installing the oil seal in the wrong orientation, conditions that can cause leakage or poor fork operation.

Brake, steering, and suspension work requires secure motorcycle support, while battery charging and electrical diagnosis should follow the manual's stated precautions and final operational checks.
