Variant control matters in this set. The 12-liter work description separates injection-pump engines from PDE builds and shows different timing-gear-casing sealant patterns for earlier and later versions. The 16-liter material distinguishes DC and DI layouts, while the fuel manual separates 12-liter layouts, 9-/16-liter industrial layouts, and the 16-liter marine arrangement for filter and bleeding work. On the 9-liter engine, the main-bearing-cap procedure changes at engine No. 6 285 724, so bottom-end repair data must be selected by engine number.

Scania tool numbers are identified throughout the procedures. Examples include universal stand 587 692, PDE31 and PDE32 setting tools 99 414 and 99 442, compression tester 98 249, cylinder-liner cutter 587 512 with extension 588 672, connecting-rod checking fixture 587 110, and fuel-pressure gauges 98 113 and 99 362.

Useful illustrated references include the DI9 A, DI12 A, and DC16 A coolant-circuit layouts, the 9-/12-/16-liter unit-injector adjustment-order charts, PDE31/PDE32 setting-tool views, feed-pump pressure-gauge connection layouts, 16-liter gear-drive and camshaft-setting views, and open/closed crankcase-ventilation layouts for the 9-liter engine.

The fuel-system work description flags the liquid-hammer risk if fuel enters a cylinder during unit-injector repair. The engine work descriptions also warn that rotating the camshaft or crankshaft after intermediate-gear removal can bring pistons and valves into contact.

Scope note: the 9-liter work description and DC9 operator’s manual are industrial-engine publications. The 12- and 16-liter work descriptions cover industrial and marine engines, but their separate operator’s manuals are industrial editions. Standard engine components are covered; machine-specific installation equipment, a full parts catalog, and complete machine wiring diagrams are outside this set. Before any maintenance or repair, disable the starting system and follow the engine-lifting, hot oil/coolant, battery, and fuel-system safety instructions in the opening pages.
