This MTD service manual covers the 2005–2010 700 Series lawn tractor platform, including the 760, 770, 780, and 790 drive variants. The November 2010 edition of the Professional Shop Manual carries Form Number 769-06667.

Timed-deck procedures include PTO and timing belt layouts and pulley timing-mark illustrations. Incorrect blade timing can allow the blades to strike each other. Further procedures address spindle replacement, brake puck assemblies, deck lift bushings, and the manual PTO engagement lever and cable.

Selected Transaxle Clearances and Voltage-Drop Limits

For the mechanical transaxle spin test, specified input-shaft backlash is 0.006"–0.014" with the brake shaft held and forward or reverse engaged. The brake rotor-to-pad clearance is 0.010"–0.015".

The electrical diagnostic section gives less than 0.1 volt as the expected voltage drop across a good circuit under load; a reading greater than 0.2 volt indicates a substantial resistance problem.
