Engine Repair, PGM-FI Diagnostics, and Combined ABS Service

The highlights below show selected workshop procedures. The manual also covers lap timer troubleshooting and evaporative emissions service for California-specification models.

• Scheduled maintenance: Follow the maintenance schedules and procedures for valve clearance, spark plugs, oil and filter changes, coolant replacement, and drive-chain inspection.
• Engine and transmission: Remove and reinstall the engine by chassis type, service the cylinder head and cam chain, split the crankcase, and inspect the transmission, balancer, crankshaft, pistons, and cylinders.
• Clutch and shift linkage: Service the assist and back-torque-limiter clutch using the correct disc, plate, spring-seat, and judder-spring arrangement. Inspect the starter clutch and gearshift linkage.
• Fuel and electrical diagnostics: Trace PGM-FI faults with symptom charts, diagnostic trouble codes, and ECM connector tests. Check fuel pressure and flow, charging, ignition, starting, and the Honda Electronic Steering Damper.
• Brakes and chassis: Service conventional brakes and Combined ABS, including year-specific bleeding. Find procedures for wheels, forks, steering-head bearings, the rear shock, swingarm, and suspension linkage.
• Wiring and routing: Match seven wiring diagrams to the year and trim. Use connector views, cable and harness routing drawings, and ABS brake-pipe layouts during diagnosis and reassembly.

Engine Access, Timing, and Internal Inspection

Seat, cowl, intake-duct, fender, seat-rail, muffler, and exhaust-pipe procedures show how to reach the systems being serviced. Engine removal and installation are documented separately for Standard/SP and ABS chassis.

Cylinder-head procedures cover camshaft removal and installation, cam-chain timing, and valve-guide and valve-seat work. Lubrication and cooling sections include oil-pressure inspection, cooling-system testing, and flow diagrams. During bottom-end repair, use the color-code tables to select main-journal and crankpin bearings, then check installed clearance.

Clutch Reassembly by Model Year

The clutch chapter separates the 2008 assembly from the later arrangement so the discs, plates, spring seat, and judder spring can be installed in the correct order. Once the right crankcase cover is off, turning the crankshaft counterclockwise can damage the starter reduction gear.

PGM-FI, Charging, and Electrical Fault Isolation

The Motorcycle Communication System (MCS) procedures show how to read current and freeze-frame data. MIL blink-code procedures provide another way to retrieve fault codes. The manual covers ECM connector and sensor tests, throttle-body and injector service, and oxygen-sensor diagnosis on models after 2011. Special-tool references include SCS service connector 070PZ-ZY30100 and test probe 07ZAJ-RDJA110.

Separate chapters cover the charging system, ignition, starter, steering damper, instruments, lights, and switches. Routing drawings show where harnesses, cables, and ABS pipes run so they can be secured clear of moving parts during reassembly.

Combined ABS Bleeding and SP Suspension Limits

The brake chapters distinguish the conventional hydraulic lines from the Combined ABS valve and power-unit circuits. Combined ABS bleeding follows separate routines for 2009–2013 and 2014, including one-way-valve bleeding and motor activation. The manual also covers wheel-speed sensors, indicator and control-unit diagnosis, and post-service checks. Matching the procedure to the model year matters because air can remain in the valve and power-unit passages.

Standard and ABS fork coverage includes disassembly, seal and bushing replacement, and fork-oil procedures. The SP sections cover fork and shock removal, installation, inspection, and adjustment. Sample Valve Clearances and Brake Torque Values

For a cold engine below 35°C (95°F), the specified valve clearances are 0.16 ± 0.03 mm intake and 0.30 ± 0.03 mm exhaust. Front brake caliper mounting bolts are specified at 45 N·m for Standard and ABS models and 40 N·m for the SP, with new bolts specified for reassembly.
