Porsche 911 Carrera 996 Workshop Manual Set, 1998–2002 (P/N WKD 483 721)

The workshop folders combine mechanical repair instructions with system diagnosis, while the embedded service-information brochures explain later design changes. Those brochures distinguish technical updates from the repair procedures in the workshop chapters.

Coverage limits: The automatic-transmission repair folder is for the Boxster A86 transmissions; it is not a Carrera Tiptronic overhaul manual. The separate vehicle wiring booklet covers models 99/00, with an additional model-2000 GT3 sheet. Targa, Carrera 4S, Turbo and GT2 material in the General PDF is supplementary service information, not a complete workshop manual for each variant.

PDF Search, Bookmarks and Diagram Detail

Search and navigation: The 13 workshop PDFs contain searchable text, with gaps in some illustrated pages and tables. The separate wiring PDF has no searchable diagram text, but it has internal sheet bookmarks. Ten workshop PDFs use file-based bookmark links that depend on reader support; a few entries have no active destination. General and Boxster Automatic Transmission have no embedded bookmarks.

Small labels in the separate wiring booklet require zooming. The Targa roof schematics in the General PDF are lower resolution and remain soft when enlarged.

The ZIP contains 14 printable PDFs totaling 3,157 pages. The General PDF combines its workshop section with the three service-information brochures listed above. All covers, forewords, contents pages, supplement records and blank divider pages are already included in the page counts.

Engine, Drivetrain, Chassis and Body Repair

The following highlights show selected coverage, rather than a complete contents list. Other included topics range from fuel-level sender calibration to Litronic headlight troubleshooting.

• Engine and fuel systems: Step-by-step engine removal, crankcase and piston work, cylinder-head service, camshaft timing, lubrication and cooling repairs, plus fuel-pressure and pump-delivery tests.

• Manual drivetrain: Clutch, release-system, pedal and shift-cable service; G96/00 removal and sealing; Carrera 4 front-drive work; and GT3 G96/90 internal repair.

• Boxster Tiptronic: Torque-converter and selector service, transmission removal, ATF checks, hydraulic-control-unit work, speed sensors, cooler replacement and final-drive repair.

• Suspension, steering and brakes: Spring-strut, wheel-bearing, tie-rod and drive-shaft work; ride-height and alignment settings; ABS/TC and PSM component service; brake inspection and bleeding.

• Factory diagnosis: Porsche System Tester 2 fault-code test plans, actual values, input signals, drive-link tests, control-module coding and system-specific calibration.

Porsche prepared the workshop procedures for its workshops and assumes completed vocational training and sound product knowledge; this material suits trained technicians with the specified diagnostic equipment, fixtures and measuring tools.

Engine Repair and Variant Differences

The engine material separates the standard M96/01 from the M96/01 S X51 package, whose chapter is marked as not applicable to U.S. vehicles. Internal work reaches the bearing housing, intermediate shaft, connecting rods, piston installation and crankshaft seals.

The second engine folder adds cylinder-head disassembly, valve springs and stem seals, camshaft installation and timing adjustment with the engine installed or removed. Lubrication and cooling chapters cover the air/oil separator, oil pumps, heat exchanger, coolant pump, thermostat and leak checks, with separate GT3 procedures.

The 2002 service-information brochure explains the M96/03, VarioCam Plus, ME 7.8 and returnless fuel system. Its design descriptions should be distinguished from the earlier engine repair instructions.

Gearbox and Running-Gear Detail

Carrera 4 material adds cardan-shaft removal, viscous-clutch testing, front final-drive seals, support and oil service. GT3 G96/90 coverage extends to the gear housing, input and pinion shafts, synchronizers, GKN limited-slip differential and ring-and-pinion adjustment.

GT3 suspension sections distinguish road and Club Sport configurations, including spring-strut, stabilizer, alignment and spoiler settings. Steering coverage also includes the rack, steering lock, steering wheel/airbag and hydraulic pump.

Body, Convertible Top and Cabin Systems

Body repair chapters provide measurement references, welding information, sectional repairs and replacement procedures for major panels. Exterior coverage includes convertible-top frame and covering work, hydraulic cylinders, compartment-lid mechanisms, calibration, hardtop adjustment and bonded glazing.

The Targa supplement explains the glass-roof module, rear-window closing assistance, drainage and roof-control schematics. Carrera 4S information describes its chassis and body differences.

Diagnostic Tests, Illustrations and Equipment

DME material centers on control-module programming and catalytic-converter version matching. Other diagnostic sections cover Tiptronic System G50, ABS/TC 5.3, Carrera 4 PSM from model year 1999 and PSM 5.7 for Carrera and Carrera 4 from model year 2000.

Body-system diagnosis includes the convertible top, airbags, roll-over protection, seat memory, heating, alarm/immobilizer, instrument cluster, PCM, ParkAssistent System P01 and headlight beam adjustment. Convertible-top test plans connect switch and potentiometer readings with connector assignments and calibration routines, helping distinguish position-signal faults from an uncalibrated mechanism.

Illustrations include convertible-top layouts and pinouts, ABS 5.3 three-channel and ABS/TC 5.3 four-channel diagrams, PSM component views, G96/90 gear-housing and input-shaft exploded views, and M96/01 bearing-housing and piston views.

Specified equipment includes electrical adapters 9616/9636, engine fixtures 9592/9607, piston tools from the 9602/9603 families, transmission sleeve 9255, GT3 suspension wrench 9647 and wheel-suspension tools 9546/9560. Reference material supplies torque tables, fluid data, wear limits, alignment settings and electrical test specifications.

Repair Cautions and Workshop Requirements

The clutch chapter distinguishes Boxster boost-spring hardware from Carrera parts and warns that grease can damage coated spring components or the clutch-master-cylinder pushrod. Engine cautions address piston damage from tilting a crankcase half and damage to crankshaft-seal micro lips from imperfections in the fitting tool.

Powertrain lifting, compressed springs, brake hydraulics, airbag and roll-over components, body welding and refrigerant work require the manual’s task-specific precautions and appropriate workshop equipment.

A Preview of Fuel-Pressure Test Specifications

For the earlier Carrera fuel system with a return line, the fuel-pressure test specifies 3.8 ± 0.2 bar with the engine stopped and the pump operating, versus 3.3 ± 0.2 bar at idle. The illustrated test uses pressure gauge P 378a and connection line 9559.

These specifications belong to that repair chapter’s fuel-system configuration. The 2002 service-information brochure separately describes a returnless system.
