Engine, Transmission, and Driving Controls

The engine sections use the eighth VIN character to keep L32, L36, and LT1 information straight before fluids, parts, or procedures are selected. Starting instructions distinguish the V6 engines from the 5.7L LT1, while the transmission section treats the automatic, five-speed, and six-speed controls separately. It also explains reverse lockout, recommended manual shift points, automatic-transmission performance mode, second-gear starts on slippery surfaces, and the LT1 traction-control system.

For LT1 six-speed cars, the manual gives the exact ECM-controlled skip-shift conditions: coolant temperature above 170°F (77°C), road speed of 15-20 mph (24-32 km/h), and 35 percent throttle or less. It then provides the computer-aided 1-to-4, 4-to-5, and 5-to-6 shift-speed guidance. That makes it possible to distinguish normal commanded skip-shift behavior from a suspected shifter or transmission problem.
