Pontiac Firebird Trans-AM Models
The Trans Am was a specialty package for the Firebird, typically improving handling, horsepower, and suspension, as well as minor look modifications such as exclusive spoilers, hoods, fog lights and wheels. Four different generations were manufactured between 1969 and 2002. These vehicles were manufactured on the F-body platform, which was also shared by the Chevrolet Camaro. See Pontiac Firebird Trans-AM 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 Repair Manual Download available here.
Notwithstanding its name, the Trans Am was not originally used in the Trans Am Series, as its smallest engine surpassed the SCCA's five-liter displacement limit. The second generation was available from 1970 to 1981. The Firebird Trans Am was picked as the Official Pace Car for the 1980 Indianapolis 500.
The Trans Am GTA (Gran Turismo Americano) was a preferences package available on the Firebird Trans Am which put gold 16-inch diamond-spoke alloy wheels, a unicolor paint scheme, and special cloisonné GTA badges. The GTA (along with the Formula model that was planned to fill the gap between the base model Firebird and mid-level Trans Am) was the idea of former Pontiac marketing manager Lou Wassel.
It was proposed to be the "ultimate" Trans Am and was the most costly Firebird available. The GTA equipment package formally went on sale in 1987 and shunned a gas-guzzler tax thanks to its lightweight PW 16-inch gold cross-lace wheels. The high-performance WS6 suspension set was also re-tuned to give a more compliant ride while still maintaining tight handling features.
