Repair Details That Matter
During axle-housing assembly, support tool D9 must remain in place until the axle shaft is engaged; removing it early can cock the oil seal and leave an axle leak. Transmission clutch packs must be lowered without striking their lower bearings, and marked bearing/gear and coupling/housing positions must stay aligned; mishandling can damage the bearings or leave the gear train misaligned. Center-hinge repair depends on retaining each shim stack and installing the bearing, spacer, and dust-seal pieces in the specified orientation; mixed shims can create hinge play, while reversed seals or spacers shorten bearing and seal life.
Before testing or repair, park on level ground, install the frame lock and safety pins, block the wheels, lower or mechanically support the work equipment, relieve hydraulic/ECSS and common-rail fuel pressure, and isolate the batteries where the procedure requires it.
