Model-Specific Repair Coverage
The opening specification tables separate the two engine builds, carburetor configurations, final-reduction and drive-chain arrangements, ignition-advance behavior, and market-dependent lighting equipment. Cable and harness routing views identify the XL500R-only decompressor cable and area-specific wire-clamp locations. A revised maintenance schedule, lubrication map, engine and frame torque tables, inspection limits, fluid data, and electrical test specifications support the procedures throughout the addendum.
The fuel-system chapter goes well beyond a jet-size table. It shows carburetor teardown, accelerator-pump diaphragm inspection, float-valve and jet service, passage cleaning, float-level checking, and the final pilot-screw and fast-idle adjustments. The manual warns that forcing the pilot screw against its seat can damage the pilot-screw seat—a useful caution when repairing an otherwise serviceable PD-series carburetor.
The cylinder-head material is narrower than a full top-end overhaul chapter. It concentrates on the model-specific head-cover assembly, cam-sprocket index marks, tensioner-wedge handling, valve-timing verification, sealing, and final adjustment references; the base manual remains necessary for the rest of the engine repair sequence.
Chassis, Suspension, and Brake Depth
The chassis sections document work that short maintenance guides normally omit. The front end includes wheel-bearing removal and installation, brake-panel service, brake-cam synchronization, fork teardown, oil-seal and circlip installation, fluid-level setup, fork alignment, and steering-stem bearing/race replacement. Disturbing the front-brake connecting rod or reinstalling the arms away from their punch marks can upset synchronization and reduce braking performance.
At the rear, the addendum covers hub and driven-flange bearings, rear-brake setup, shock removal, spring inspection and preload setting, linkage lubrication, swingarm removal, and needle-bearing replacement. Honda limits rear-shock repair to the serviceable external parts; the gas-filled damper unit is not to be opened and is replaced as an assembly if damaged, leaking, or below its inspection standard.

Useful visual references include the cable-and-harness routing views, front and rear suspension exploded assemblies, battery/charging-system diagram, automatic cam-chain tensioner section view, electrical-advance CDI circuit and waveform charts, and the two-page main wiring diagram.
