The P/EP publication supplies the core repair procedures. The later R, T, and W books are change-only supplements and explicitly direct the technician to use the applicable earlier manual for complete service information. They do not repeat every engine, chassis, carburetion, or electrical procedure. This distinction matters if you are buying the file for a later model rather than a P or EP.

What the Supplements Add

The R section adds the STR slide-rail suspension, revised carburetor/clutch/gearing data, magneto-rotor assembly information, a PZ480ER circuit diagram, grip- and thumb-warmer troubleshooting, and separate R/STR and ER wiring diagrams. The T supplement updates the inspection schedule, special tools, sheave distance and offset, drive-chain adjustment, clutch/gearing selection, and primary-sheave service. The W supplement adds later drive-belt setup, sheave alignment, clutch and gearing selections, revised primary- and secondary-sheave procedures, and model-specific maintenance specifications.

The base manual goes well beyond seasonal maintenance. It carries major jobs from removal through inspection and reassembly for the steering and front suspension, both sheaves, drive-chain housing and jackshaft, brake, slide-rail suspension, drive axle and track, engine internals, recoil starter, carburetors, and intake system. Oil-pump service is a specific scope limit: the manual covers external removal, installation, stroke adjustment, and air bleeding, but Yamaha states that the precision pump itself must not be disassembled.

Diagrams, Test Data, and Service Cautions

Useful illustration sets include the primary sheave and drive V-belt, secondary sheave, drive-chain housing and jackshaft, slide-rail suspension, and crankcase and crankshaft exploded views, backed by P/EP and R-series wiring diagrams. Electrical fault charts isolate no-start, no-charge, no-spark, lighting, brake-light, and warmer faults with component checks and factory test specifications.

The primary-sheave spider has a left-hand thread; inadequate support at the required load can crack the sheaves or spider, and the manual prohibits threadlocker on the bushings. The secondary sheave stores substantial spring force and must be contained with the specified compressor before its retaining hardware is released. The manual also warns that incorrect V-belt position can change clutch engagement and cause unexpected machine movement, so its clutch and belt safety procedures matter during this repair work.
