Yamaha Manual Features & Content Preview

This 515-page Yamaha V-Star 650 PDF package brings together three files containing four separate factory publications, rather than one 515-page manual. Workshop coverage is built around the XVS650AK(C) base service manual, with model-specific supplements for the XVS650K(C) and XVS650AN(C). The XVS650P(C)/XVS650AP(C) volume is an owner's manual covering operation, inspection, routine maintenance, and minor repair. It is not a full P(C)/AP(C) engine-and-chassis overhaul supplement.

  • Document identity: the 360-page service file contains the XVS650AK(C) Service Manual, P/N LIT-11616-11-16, first edition August 1997, plus the appended XVS650K(C) Supplementary Service Manual, P/N LIT-11616-11-21, first edition December 1997. Also included are the 36-page XVS650AN(C) supplement, P/N LIT-11616-14-31, first edition October 2000, and the 119-page XVS650P(C)/XVS650AP(C) Owner's Manual, P/N LIT-11626-15-15, first edition April 2001.
  • Engine and transmission repair: covers engine removal, cylinder-head service, rocker arms and camshafts, valves and springs, cylinders and pistons, clutch and primary drive, shift shaft, oil pump, AC magneto and starter clutch, crankcase separation, crankshaft and connecting rods, transmission inspection, and reassembly.
  • Shaft drive, suspension, and brakes: includes front and rear wheel service, wheel balancing, disc and drum brake work, master-cylinder and caliper inspection, hydraulic brake bleeding, fork disassembly and assembly, steering-head service, swingarm and rear-shock inspection, drive-shaft work, final-drive overhaul, gear-backlash measurement, shim selection, and ring-gear positioning.
  • Carburetion and electrical diagnosis: details dual-carburetor inspection and assembly, fuel-level and throttle-position-sensor adjustment, air-induction-system checks, ignition and starting circuits, charging, lighting and signal systems, fuel-pump and carburetor-heater circuits, switch testing, and self-diagnosis.
  • Model-specific supplement content: the XVS650K(C) supplement updates model-specific specifications, cable routing, fuel-tank and seat removal, headlight service, front-fork repair, and steering-head procedures. The XVS650AN(C) supplement adds revised specifications and routing, rear-brake and shift-pedal adjustments, air-induction-system diagrams and testing, front-brake pad and caliper service, and its own wiring diagram.
  • Owner operation and maintenance: the P(C)/AP(C) owner's manual explains the main switch and steering lock, handlebar controls, self-canceling turn signals, fuel cock, sidestand and ignition circuit cut-off system, pre-operation checks, starting and shifting, maintenance schedules, oil and final-gear service, brake and wheel checks, battery and bulb work, troubleshooting, and short- or long-term storage.
  • Factory reference data: provides component-specific torque specifications, fluid capacities and approved lubricant data, wear limits and clearances, compression and electrical test values, lubrication diagrams, cable-routing layouts, numbered exploded views, and job instruction charts for removal and disassembly work.

Workshop Repair Depth

The base service manual goes well beyond routine maintenance. Its engine chapter documents removal, internal inspection, repair, and reassembly of the air-cooled SOHC V-twin and five-speed transmission. The chassis chapter reaches into fork and steering repair, brake hydraulic work, wheel service, and the shaft-drive assemblies where backlash and shim selection matter. Chapter-level troubleshooting covers hard starting, poor idle or high-speed performance, shifting and clutch faults, overheating, weak braking, fork leakage, unstable handling, and lighting or signal failures.

Factory-tool references include the final-gear backlash band YM-01231 / 90890-01231, middle-gear backlash tool YM-33222 / 90890-04080, clutch holding tool YM-91042 / 90890-04086, fuel-level gauge YM-01312-A / 90890-01312, and steering-stem ring-nut wrench YU-33975 / 90890-01403. These listings show which repair operations require dedicated measuring or holding equipment instead of improvised tools.

Diagrams, Diagnostics, and Model Matching

Diagnostic graphics include the XVS650AK(C) wiring diagram, XVS650AN(C) wiring diagram, ignition-system circuit diagram, electric-starting-system circuit diagram, fuel-pump-system circuit diagram, and air-induction-system diagrams. Electrical sections combine those schematics with continuity checks, component tests, connector inspection, circuit operation, and fault-isolation charts.

The model-code tables distinguish XVS650K(C) codes 5FB1 (U.S.), 5FB2 (California), and 5FB3 (Canada); XVS650AK(C) codes 5BN1/5BN2/5BN3 for the same markets; and XVS650AN(C) codes 5BNT (U.S.) and 5BNU (California). The owner's manual also provides separate XVS650 and XVS650A dimensions, tire and wheel data, and maximum-load specifications.

Scope and Shop Cautions

The XVS650K(C) and XVS650AN(C) books are supplements and must be used with the XVS650AK(C) base service manual. Workshop-level repair coverage in this set is therefore tied to those exact service-manual model codes; the P(C)/AP(C) material remains owner-level documentation.

The manual warns that spinning cleaned bearings with compressed air can damage their surfaces. During middle-gear backlash work, hammering the universal joint can distort the collapsible collar, while overtightening the bearing housing can reduce backlash enough to damage the gears. Brake repair also requires clean, correctly specified fluid: solvents, used fluid, mixed fluid types, or contamination can damage seals and lead to leakage or poor braking. Securely support the motorcycle before wheel, fork, brake, shaft-drive, or engine work.
