Jeep Manual Features & Content Preview
- Vehicle and document coverage: Covers 2000 Jeep Wrangler TJ models with the 2.5L EPE four-cylinder or 4.0L ERH six-cylinder MPI gasoline engine. The identification sections also cover left- and right-hand-drive vehicle codes and market-specific equipment. This 1,407-page PDF is the Chrysler factory service manual, Publication No. 81-370-0048.
- Engine, cooling, and fuel-system repair: Covers engine removal, short-block service, cylinder-head and valve work, timing chain and sprockets, camshaft and bearing service, crankshaft, piston, and connecting-rod inspection, oil-pressure and compression testing, cooling-system diagnosis, fuel-pump pressure, capacity, and leak-down tests, injector checks, and PCM VIN reprogramming.
- Transmission, clutch, and transfer-case service: Provides diagnosis, removal, teardown, inspection, reassembly, and adjustment for the AX5 and NV3550 five-speed manual transmissions, 30RH/32RH three-speed automatics, clutch components, and NV231 transfer case. Coverage includes hydraulic pressure and air tests, band and cable adjustment, geartrain and synchronizer repair, and transfer-case shift-linkage work.
- Axles, driveline, and suspension: Details propeller-shaft vibration, balance, runout, U-joint, and operating-angle diagnosis; the 181 FBI front axle and 194 RBI/216 RBI rear axles; standard and Trac-Lok differentials; pinion depth, bearing preload, backlash, and tooth-contact pattern setup; plus link/coil suspension, wheel alignment, hubs, ball joints, bushings, track bars, and stabilizer bars.
- Brakes, steering, frame/body, and HVAC: Includes base and antilock brake diagnosis, master-cylinder and system bleeding, disc and drum repair, power-steering flow and pressure testing, frame and skid-plate data, body opening and weld/sealer references, and A/C performance, leak testing, refrigerant recovery, evacuation, charging, and component replacement.
- Electrical diagnosis and shop data: Group 8W provides circuit diagrams, power and ground distribution, connector pin-outs, splice and component locations, terminal and connector repair, and wiring fault-isolation procedures. Assembly-specific torque charts, fluid capacities, wear limits, clearances, electrical test values, and factory special-tool references are carried throughout the manual.
Configuration, Build, and Maintenance Coverage
The opening pages decode the VIN and body-code plate, including EPE/ERH engine codes, roof and market information, and transmission build codes. The body-code chart lists an AX15 code, but the transmission repair chapters in this PDF are for the AX5 and NV3550 manuals; there is no separate AX15 overhaul section. The 30RH is identified for the 2.5L engine and the 32RH for the 4.0L engine.
Normal and severe-duty maintenance schedules distinguish off-road driving, trailer towing, dusty operation, extensive idling, and other demanding use. Market-specific supplemental pages cover remote headlamp leveling, rear fog lamp switches, emergency tow-eye and license-plate bracket service, and leaded-fuel applications. The file also carries TSB 26-02-00 pages for early- and late-build exhaust assemblies and TSB 26-04-01 NV3550 disassembly and assembly updates.
Workshop Procedures, Special Tools, and Diagrams
Major shop procedures go well beyond basic component replacement. The axle chapters reference Pinion Depth Gauge Set 6774, Axle Housing Spreader W-129-B, Dial Indicator C-3339, and dedicated ball-joint and suspension-bushing tools for differential setup, seal and bearing replacement, and housing service. The automatic-transmission section adds hydraulic schematics, pressure and air testing, valve-body work, clutch and servo inspection, planetary geartrain repair, and band adjustment. NV231 coverage reaches the drive chain, shafts, oil pump, range and mode forks, planetary assembly, seals, and shift-linkage adjustment.
Representative visual references include the Gear Tooth Contact Patterns chart, Pinion Gear Depth Gauge Tools view, power-distribution diagrams, antilock-brake circuits, connector pin-outs, and connector/ground/splice-location views.
Two easy-to-miss cautions show the level of factory detail. Rubber-bushed suspension arms are final-tightened at normal ride height to avoid unwanted bushing preload and premature wear. During axle repair, a collapsible pinion spacer that has been over-crushed must be replaced rather than corrected by backing off the nut, or bearing preload and components can be damaged.
Scope and Safety
The manual contains DTC descriptions, circuit-actuation and state-display coverage, DRB III references, and many system tests. For some complete scan-tool fault-isolation routines, however, it directs the technician to the separate Powertrain Diagnostics Procedures manual.
Repairs involving a raised vehicle, airbags, brake hydraulics, fuel pressure, or refrigerant require the support, isolation, recovery, and protective equipment specified by Chrysler. This listing summarizes the contents of the PDF; it does not reproduce the factory repair sequences.
