Coverage and Technical Scope

  • February 2006 Keeway International Development Co., Ltd. service publication for the Hurricane. The PDF is titled HURRICANE 50-90CC and contains 115 numbered pages.
  • The printed engine specification is the 49.8 mL single-cylinder, two-stroke, forced-air-cooled configuration with piston-reed induction, 40.0 mm bore, 39.6 mm stroke, 6.9:1 compression ratio, electric and kick starting, and pressure-feed lubrication.
  • Transmission coverage includes the automatic clutch, variable-ratio V-belt drive, movable drive and driven faces, starter gears, kick-start mechanism, final reduction gearing, and rear axle components. The service-data section lists a 2.64-0.86 variable ratio and 11.076 final reduction ratio.
  • Machine identification pages show the frame/VIN location on the steering tube and the engine-number location on the rear crankcase. Keeway also notes that scooters supplied to different markets may have minor specification differences for local regulations.

Component and Maintenance Details

The periodic maintenance section runs from the initial 1,000 km/600 mile inspection through 24,000 km/15,000 miles. It covers cylinder-head and exhaust fasteners, cylinder decarbonizing, spark plug service, air-cleaner cleaning, idle speed and throttle cable checks, CCI oil-pump adjustment, gear oil, fuel lines, brakes, steering, suspension, tires, and chassis fasteners. Brake fluid is scheduled for replacement every two years and the brake hose every four years; the air cleaner is called out for cleaning every 3,000 km/2,000 miles.

Engine repair depth goes well beyond routine service. The factory manual covers engine removal and remounting, crankcase separation, crankshaft and connecting-rod inspection, bearing and oil-seal replacement, cylinder and piston measurement, piston-ring and reed-valve checks, transmission and final-drive service, automatic clutch inspection, movable drive/driven-face repair, kick-starter repair, starter pinion service, oil-pump installation, intake-pipe work, and magneto removal and installation. The carburetor section identifies the KEEWAY-WENLING PZ19JB unit with a 19 mm throat, #80 main jet, #57.5 pilot jet, third-groove needle position, and 13+/-1 mm float height.

Factory procedures commonly handled by a repair shop include crankcase splitting and crankshaft installation; clutch engagement and lock-up testing with a tachometer; V-belt, driven-face, bearing, and oil-seal service; front brake caliper and master-cylinder disassembly/reassembly with hydraulic bleeding; steering-stem and front-suspension overhaul and adjustment; and starter-motor, relay, magneto, regulator/rectifier, and charging-system testing. The special-tool section identifies the T03 flywheel remover, T07 cylinder pressure gauge, T08 piston pin remover, T09 spark plug remover, T10 flywheel lockbolt remover, sleeve-tool sets, and a clutch clamp. The steering section separately specifies 09910-60611 as a universal tightening wrench. Reassembly notes also call out KEEWAY No. 1215 sealing compound and designated thread-lock products at specific joints and fasteners.

Repair cautions are component-specific. The kick-starter nut uses a left-hand thread, and the clutch shoe assembly is specifically not to be disassembled because the clutch shoe can be damaged. Keeway warns against driving the crankshaft into the crankcase with a hammer because crankshaft alignment accuracy can be affected. The rear-brake section also warns that excess grease on the cam can contaminate the lining and reduce braking effectiveness.

Electrical, Chassis, and Diagram Coverage

Electrical diagnosis covers the flywheel magneto, combined CDI/ignition-coil unit, spark testing, magneto exciting coil, charging and lighting circuits, regulator/rectifier, starter motor and starter relay, fuel-level meter and sender, oil-level warning circuit, switches, and YB4L-B 12 V 4 Ah battery. The charging-output check specifies 13-16 V at 5,000 rpm, while the starter-motor section gives a 3.5 mm brush service limit and an 80-150 ohm starter-relay coil resistance benchmark.

Chassis repair sections cover the front wheel and bearings, front disc brake, caliper, master cylinder, steering stem and front suspension, rear wheel, drum brake, brake shoes, and cable/hose routing. Named references include the Ignition System circuit, Charging and Lighting System circuit, Starter System diagram, Front Brake System exploded view, Steering Stem and Front Suspension exploded view, and the full Wiring Diagram.

Brake hydraulic work and running drivetrain/electrical tests involve brake fluid, rotating parts, and live measurements. The scooter should be securely supported and the manual's cautions followed before disassembly or test work.

Service-data tables provide measurement standards and wear limits needed for repair decisions. Crankshaft runout is limited to 0.05 mm, connecting-rod small-end inside diameter to 14.040 mm, and piston-to-cylinder clearance is 0.06-0.07 mm with a 0.120 mm service limit. The same service-data section also tabulates clutch, transmission, carburetor, electrical, brake, tire, and suspension standards rather than limiting the manual to general maintenance values.

The summary torque table lists 15-18 Nm for the cylinder-head fasteners and spark plug, 45-50 Nm for the flywheel lock bolt, and 55-60 Nm for the driven-wheel-face clutch locknut. The CCI oil-pump test specification is 1.1-1.3 mL per 5 minutes at 0.06 MPa and 118 rpm. For final-drive lubricant, the reassembly section calls for a 90 mL fill to the level hole, while the general/service-data tables list a 0.1 L gear-oil capacity and GL-5 85W/90 gear oil.
