1984–1992 John Deere 322 / 330 / 332 / 430 Lawn and Garden Tractor Service Manual (P/N TM1591)

This John Deere technical service manual covers the 1984–1992 322, 330, 332, and 430 lawn and garden tractors. P/N TM1591, revised July 15, 1995, combines repair instructions with system checkout and diagnostic procedures, replacing these models’ coverage in TM1277, TM1309, and TM1345.

• Engine and fuel systems: Engine removal and installation, gasoline and diesel troubleshooting, cooling-system checks, diesel fuel-system bleeding, and fuel controller adjustment.

Internal engine repair and valve-clearance specifications are referred to CTM12 for the gasoline engine and CTM3 for the diesels; these separate component manuals are not included.

The diesel fuel-bleeding instructions distinguish bleed points from injection-pump delivery-valve fittings. Turning the delivery-valve fittings can damage internal pump parts.

Hydrostatic Drive and Steering Repairs

Transmission procedures cover the hydrostatic pump and drive motor rotating groups, charge pump, and control linkage. Separate adjustments address early and later neutral-return designs, while the 430 has dedicated two-speed axle and differential-lock procedures.

The 330 steering gearbox uses the JDG457 service set. Power steering valve work uses the DFMX1 holding fixture and DFMX2 alignment shims, with fabrication details included; the steering cylinder is replaced as an assembly, not internally rebuilt.

Mower Gear Cases and Workshop References

Selected Cooling, Ignition, and PTO Specifications

A few examples show the reference data provided: coolant capacity for the 322 and 330 is 2.8 L (3 U.S. qt). The 322 ignition tests specify pulser-coil resistance of 15.5–23.3 ohms.

For the PTO clutch adjustment check, armature-to-rotor clearance is 0.46 mm (0.018 in.). The procedure applies to the front clutch and, when fitted, the rear clutch, with the key switch off.
