This March 1997 John Deere Consumer Products Group technical manual, TM-GX10131, covers Sabre 1338, 1538, 1546, 15538, 1638, and 1646 lawn tractors in the gear and hydrostatic variants listed above.

Electrical Fault Tracing

The Electrical Schematic, Wire Harness, and Ignition Circuit Test Points drawings identify circuits, connectors, and numbered test locations. Diagnostic tables pair test conditions and normal readings with follow-up checks, helping distinguish chassis wiring and safety-interlock faults from engine ignition problems.

Fuel-shutoff-solenoid circuit tests apply to the 16 hp configuration. Battery-load, starter-current, and AC/DC output tests support cranking and charging diagnosis.

The K55 assembly notes warn that incorrectly positioned bypass push pins can break when the case halves are joined.

Steering illustrations show pinion/sector alignment and the washers used to control backlash. Pedestal bushing repair calls for an inside puller and slide hammer.

Deck drawings distinguish early and revised assemblies. Belt-routing illustrations and the specified TY15272 deck-leveling gauge support side-to-side and front-to-rear setup.

Spindles are replaced with their pulleys as complete assemblies. The manual warns that adding grease through the factory spindle fitting can damage spindle seals.

Bulletin 96-009 addresses thrown belts on 1338 Gear and 1538 Hydro models. Bulletin 96-010 covers surging on 1538 Hydro, 1546 Gear, and 1646 Hydro models, including oil saturation of the paper air-filter element.

Follow the manual’s isolation and support precautions for mechanical work around rotating blades, tensioned springs, and raised tractor components.

These figures are a small selection from the engine, electrical, and hydrostatic service specifications.

Engine mounting hardware is specified at 32 N·m (24 lb-ft), and the spark-plug gap for the 15 and 16 hp engines is 0.76 mm (0.030 in.).

The ground-circuit ohmmeter test allows a maximum resistance of 0.1 ohm with the ignition switch off.

The K55 reservoir fill is 1.6 L (1.7 U.S. qt) of 10W30 Class CD engine oil, to the bottom of the fill opening.
