System Coverage and Layout

Model identification is more precise than a simple 1991–1995 label. The earlier section covers the FN8 hull with 61L or 61M engine configurations and lists starting primary I.D. numbers 800101 and 600101, with engine serial numbers beginning at 000101. The later section separates FN8/61L–61M VXR and 650TX machines from GD0/61X Pro VXR and 700TX versions. Its identification tables list FN8 primary I.D. starts of 807001 and 601701, GD0 starts of 800101 and 606101, plus separate starting engine and jet-pump serials for 61L and 61X units. That distinction matters before selecting carburetor, engine, electrical, or pump specifications.

The fuel chapters trace the system from filler and tank through the fuel cock, filter, check valves, hoses, and carburetor. Separate oil-injection coverage addresses the pump, sub-tank, main tank, oil filter, check valves, and lines, while the routing material distinguishes oil-injection and premix layouts. Power-unit chapters then take the repair through top-end service, engine removal, coupling and intermediate-housing work, flywheel-magneto removal, crankcase separation, crankshaft inspection, and reassembly.

The specification tables separate the 633 cc FN8 builds from the 701 cc GD0/61X configuration rather than treating the 650 and 700 systems as interchangeable. Variant-specific data covers carburetor calibration, reed-valve limits, piston and cylinder inspection, jet-pump clearances, starter and ignition components, and assembly torque sequences. Electrical diagnosis is backed by wiring diagrams and test values for the Mitsubishi magneto/CDI system, ignition coil, charging circuit, regulator, thermo switch, starter system, and related switches.

Yamaha identifies dedicated tooling, including the CDI tester YU-91022-B, flywheel puller YB-6117 / 90890-06521, shaft holder YW-38742 / 90890-06069, and coupler wrench YW-38741 / 90890-06425. The manual also shows regional 90890-series equivalents beside the U.S./Canada tool numbers.

Two repair traps are called out directly: reversed battery leads can seriously damage the electrical system, and incorrect piston-ring or pin-clip positioning can damage the piston and rings. Gasoline vapor, battery service, rotating driveline parts, and running-engine tests require proper ventilation, isolation, eye protection, and the shop precautions stated in the manual.
