Factory Specification Highlights
Factory values run down to component level. Front 181FBI ring-gear backlash is 0.12–0.20 mm (0.005–0.008 in.); the 216FBI section uses the same range. Front lower suspension-arm bracket fasteners are 176 N·m (130 ft-lb), and the front hub/axle nut is 237 N·m (175 ft-lb). Fluid charts list 4.0L cooling capacity at 9.9 L (10.5 qt), 2.4L cooling capacity at 8.5 L (9.0 qt), 42RLE service fill at 3.8 L (8.0 pt), and overhaul fill at 8.3 L (17.6 pt), with separate NV231, NV241, NV1500, and NV3550 capacities. ATF+4 is specified for the automatic transmission and transfer cases; Dexron II is specifically rejected because it can cause clutch chatter.
Engine repair coverage includes 2.4L timing-belt, camshaft, balance-shaft, cylinder-head, crankshaft/bedplate, and oiling work, plus 4.0L compression and leakage diagnosis, cylinder-head and valvetrain repair, crankshaft service, lubrication, manifolds, and engine removal/installation. The 4.0L head sequence contains an easy-to-miss exception: bolt 11 finishes at 135 N·m (100 ft-lb) while bolts 1–10 and 12–14 finish at 149 N·m (110 ft-lb). Several repair cautions show where the factory procedure matters. Suspension-arm and track-bar bushing fasteners are tightened with the springs supporting vehicle weight; tightening with the suspension hanging can preload bushings and cause premature wear. The axle pinion uses a collapsible spacer, and backing off the pinion nut to reduce rotating torque or over-crushing the spacer can upset bearing preload and damage the assembly. Incorrect serpentine-belt routing can reverse water-pump rotation and overheat the engine.
For undercarriage repair, use the specified hoisting points and proper frame support. The manual warns that removing chassis or drivetrain components changes the vehicle's center of gravity and can make a normal hoist setup unstable.
