The cautions are specific to this engine. Yamaha warns against hammering a sticking piston pin because the connecting rod, piston, and bearing can be damaged. Another easy-to-miss warning concerns the temporary power-valve locating pin: leaving it installed prevents correct valve operation and causes a loss of high-speed power.
Suspension, Chassis, and Troubleshooting Scope
The suspension chapter relates rider weight, ability, and track conditions to spring selection, fork oil weight and level, fork-clamp position, rear spring preload, and compression and rebound damping. Front-to-rear balance checks and symptom tables address pushing or knifing in turns, high-speed searching, rear-wheel skitter, poor drive traction, and jump-landing behavior. During fork repair, the manual warns that incorrect handling of the damping cylinder can damage its cylinder and valve.
Rear-shock coverage has an important limit: the nitrogen-charged Monocross "De Carbon" unit is covered for tuning, removal, installation, and dealer-only disposal, but not internal shock overhaul. Yamaha warns against opening the cylinder or reservoir, and directs pressure changes to a dealer with the required equipment. The cooling chapter separately cautions against opening or draining a hot, pressurized system.
